Scrambled Good Eggs

The 20th annual Founders Title Company Folk and Bluegrass Festival begins next weekend (July 11), and it kicks off with the 20th annual Band Scramble Contest at 5 p.m. Friday, July 11.

Here's how it works: there are 5 containers on a stage with the name of a musical instrument. Entrants write their name on a piece of paper and deposit it in the proper container.

After the sign-up deadline of 5:30 p.m., the Band Scramble Leader will randomly draw out a group of 5 names that will constitute a band. As many bands as possible will be formed. Then each band gets 20-30 minutes to rehearse one vocal and one instrumental song. The performances begin at 6:15 p.m.

The Scramble will be held on the Plaza deck at the Snowbird Resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

I have no talent in anything, so I will not be performing.

David Burger is the pop music/pop culture writer at The Salt Lake Tribune. He's been at several newspapers, including Scranton, Pennsylvania, the home of "The Office." Before that, he spent five years in the Coast Guard. There, on boring midnight watches on the bridge, he would try to keep himself awake and/or keep from throwing up by singing "Thunder Road" to himself while balancing a sextant on his nose. (He'd also look for drowning people, of course.) He also likes condiments, except when throwing up.
