Beck here this weekend, but probably the one you don't want

Here is some of the notable things to catch this weekend, mostly musical but in one case conservative wisdom (?).

RuRu (left)
This is folk-rocker RuRu's CD release party, as well as a showcase for upstart label Northplatte Records' acts. Northplatte Records was created by acclaimed singer-songwriter Joshua James and McKay Stevens several years ago in Provo. The evening will feature Salt Lake singer-songwriter Drew Carpenter, indie-hip hop act McKay Stevens Project, ambient band Desert Noises (who have a new record, too) and finally RuRu, a 16-year-old musical prodigy who is a sophomore at Timpanogos High School. His new album is named "Elizabeth," a tribute to his mother, who died from cancer several years ago. Everyone that attends this special night of music will receive the RuRu record, and donated cans of food will chip a dollar off the admission price.

David Burger is the pop music/pop culture writer at The Salt Lake Tribune. He's been at several newspapers, including Scranton, Pennsylvania, the home of "The Office." Before that, he spent five years in the Coast Guard. There, on boring midnight watches on the bridge, he would try to keep himself awake and/or keep from throwing up by singing "Thunder Road" to himself while balancing a sextant on his nose. (He'd also look for drowning people, of course.) He also likes condiments, except when throwing up.
