The Elevation Factor
BYU jumped out to a sizable lead last night against Lamar, and junior guard Lee Cummard thinks he knows a reason why.

"Because of the elevation they got a little winded by the first spurt," Cummard said. "I think the game went on six minutes without any type of stop and I think it took a little bit ouf them. It took a little bit out of us, but we are kind of used to that."

Indeed, the thinner air might have been a shock to the system for Lamar's players.

Provo's elevation is 4,498 feet.

Beaumont, Texas? It's not even close - 30 feet.

For those of you scoring at home that's a 4,462-foot difference. That might be worth a few points on the scoreboard.

BYU has won 36 straight games at the Marriott Center, which ties Memphis for the longest active streak in the nation. Obviously, it takes more than just geographical elevation to win games. Some actual on-court elevation like the dunks BYU displayed last night help too.

But the Cougars will take any little advantage they can get to help assure the home dominance continues.

Saturday's opponent Pepperdine hails from Malibu, Calif. elevation 115 ft. So BYU will start with a 4,377-foot differential.

Let's see how many points that translates to out of the gate?

Quick hits:

- BYU head basketball coach Dave Rose said last night that junior forward Gavin MacGregor is going to try to see how his foot responds to some different excercises before deciding whether he will play or not this season. Rose said in 10-12 days BYU will know more.

- BYU athletic trainer Robert Ramos nearly had to treat himself last night when he got run over during a scramble for the ball. Ramos' chair got knocked to the floor with him in it, but he emerged relatively unscathed.
