Seems like the unwanted media attention may have made a difference.
Kent Walton, BYU's star centerfielder who was kicked out of school and off the team because his LDS Church bishop said he hadn't attended church enough, been reinstated, according to his father.
Walton, a junior from Yucaipa, Calif., was scheduled to start attending classes again this morning and start practicing with the team again this afternoon.
"He's very excited," his father Kenneth Walton told The Trib's Jay Drew last night. "and the first thing he wants to do is thank all those people who stepped up for him and supported him the past week."
We may never know the full story since the bishop does not wish to comment and the school is citing privacy to keep things quiet. Regardless, the entire episode may have some stereotypical ramifications on the national level. But at least it has been resolved in a manner that seems more reasonable for every party involved to minimize the damage.

For what it's worth:
ESPN came out with its grades of football recruiting classes and included BYU. Here you go:
BYU: C-
Zero ESPN 150 prospects
This is solid class with two prospects rated in the top 25 at their respective positions. After an impressive 11-2 season, coach Bronco Mendenhall is seeing some of the results pay off on the recruiting trail. The class as a whole is a bit top-heavy, and losing ESPN 150 prospect Uona Kaveinga (Lawndale, Calif./Leuzinger) on signing day hurt. Still tight end Austin Holt (Jordan, Utah/Bingham), safety Daniel Sorenson (Colton, Calif.) and receiver O'Neill Chambers, (Harmony, Fla.), a potential sleeper in this class, could contribute early.

Rivals meet:
The No. 36 BYU women's gymnastics team hosts No. 2 Utah in the first home meet of the season tonight at 7. It will be the 83rd meeting in the history of the programs with the Utes completely dominating the series 80-2. The last time the Cougars beat Utah at the Marriott Center was 10 years ago, and it would be a huge upset for them to do it again.
