BYU Gets An SI.com Mention
LARAMIE, Wyo. - In his "Inside Recruiting" column on SI.com, Andy Staples compared recruiting in football to the presidential election in terms of the mudslinging that takes place.
Staples featured BYU as one of his examples (Wild guess at which candidate the Cougars were joined with). Take a look at what he wrote:
"Coaches at Brigham Young should understand the plight of Republican candidate Mitt Romney. He belongs to a faith (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) that many voters don't understand, and he would have to clear up plenty of misconceptions if he wins the nomination. If he does, he should consult BYU coaches, who deal with those issues every year.
BYU is run by the Mormon church, and as such, players there must adhere to an honor code much stricter than any they would have to abide by at State U. Students at BYU are forbidden from consuming alcohol, even if they are of legal drinking age, or caffeine. Premarital sex can get a student expelled. Rival coaches have made sure to point out those facts to non-LDS players considering BYU, painting the school unfairly as a place where fun simply isn't allowed.
Rivals also have extra ammunition when recruiting against BYU for black players. The school's namesake preached more than 150 years ago that blacks were cursed because they were descendants of Biblical villain Cain. Blacks were also banned from the church's lay priesthood until 1978, when, according to a 2004 Salt Lake Tribune story, LDS church president Spencer Kimball announced he'd had a revelation to end the ban."

Speaking of Romney ... As I was making the drive into Laramie and searching for some AM sports talk I heard a discussion about the Super Bowl. Figuring it was a sports station, I kept the dial on it. But lo and behold, it was Romney making a Super Bowl prediction. Like a typical politician, he left himself some wriggle room. He picked the Patriots, but said it would be closer than many are thinking. Looks like that New York constituency is on the former Massachusetts governor's mind.

Short shot:
- The BYU men's basketball team bus pulled up the Hampton Inn about an hour ago, so no worries about the Cougars not showing up at the arena tomorrow.

Coaches telling players that if they go to BYU they won't be able to drink and have sex is only underhanded if they twist it to be something it isn't. Otherwise, it is just good advice!
There certainly is a segment of athletes who see the things that BYU bans as the major upside to being a star athlete. While I think the attitude is wrong, I understand why people who adhere to it don't want to come to BYU.
If you took a polling of Baptist, Presps, Methodists,Catholic and most other religious leaders during the early 1800s and before about the "Negro", the curse of Cain was common amongst all of them. No one mentions that, however. It would be nice if journalists actually learned historical perspective before reporting... but, it's the quick sensational story that wins out.
THis is sad that people badger the LDS faith so much. An FYI Caffeine is Not non the list of No no's That is a misprint. I believe the Honor code helps young Athletes suceed not fail. They come to a place where they can truly focus on football. Not sex and Booze Go figure. But hey all you rowdies live it up where you are and leave peaceful BYU on it's trail to prominenece. If you don't likr it don't come!
