BYU's NBA Players
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Milwaukee Bucks scout Brian Winters braved the snow just to watch BYU's game against Air Force in Colorado Springs on Wednesday night. Wyoming coach Heath Schroyer believes he knows why.
"I tell you what, Lee Cummard is as good a player as there is in this league. I think him and (Trent) Plaisted are two NBA players," Schroyer said. "Lee Cummard is as good off the baseline and as good at using screens as anybody we have faced. I think that is a hard matchup. He can really shoot it, but he puts the ball on the floor better than you think. He can post it ... he's got it all. He's got the full package."
Cummard has to be the frontrunner for Mountain West Confernce Player of the Year at this point. During conference play, the junior guard is averaging 15.5 points (tied for 7th), 7.0 rebounds (9th), and 3.3 assists (9th) while shooting 50.8 percent from the field (3rd) and 82.6 percent from the free-throw line (7th).
If Cummard continues at that pace and BYU wins the regular-season title, it's a lock. But if the Cougars slip and UNLV surges to the front, one of the Rebels (Wink Adams, Curtis Terry) could overtake Cummard.
But it's clear Schroyer is worried about more than just Cummard and Plaisted after someone asked about BYU's big three that included Jonathan Tavernari.
"Those three guys obviously are kind of a three-headed monster," he said. "I tell you what Sam Burgess and (Ben) Murdock - they got good players. They have eight or nine guys who play quality minutes, even the young guys they brought in. They are all good players."
