Nearly Boylen Over
The next most entertaining thing to watch other than the actual action on the court during BYU-Utah men's basketball games is Jim Boylen on the sidelines.

The animated Utah coach looks just as exhausted as the players as he stalks up and down - coaching box and decorum rule be darned - jawing with officials, motioning to his players, breaking a clipboard, and letting a few expletives fly. I can appreciate the passion, although I think one of these days a technical foul might hinder his team's chances in a game.

BYU junior guard Lee Cummard had a few interactions with Boylen during last night's 67-59 BYU victory.

"I was giving him a hard time about working the officials - just working him a little bit," Cummard said. "But he is going to make a great coach. He gets those players to play hard and he runs great stuff and I got a lot of respect for him. He came in and changed the whole attitude of that program and he's got them fired up."

Although not as demonstrative, BYU head coach Dave Rose had some discussions of his own with the officials. Cummard tried to play mediator between Rose and Winston Smith at one point.

"He was giving it to Winston pretty hard tonight," Cummard said. "I tried to step in and give Winston a little break."

Around The Mountain

- TCU hit 27 of 28 free throws to hold off Colorado State 66-64 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Horned Frogs only shot 33.3 percent from the field and 25 percent from 3-point range. Ironically, the conference's worst two free-throw shooting teams relied heavily on free-throwing shooting to pull out wins. TCU (65.1) is the worst free-throw shooting team followed by BYU (65.2). The Cougars were 22 of 32 from the line, which Boylen obviously felt was a huge factor in his team's loss. "We got 11 more shots than them, turnovers were even," he said. "You guys know where the disparity was. You figure it out."

- New Mexico pulled away in the second half to beat Air Force 68-51 at Clune Arena. New Mexico senior J.R. Giddens scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

MWC Standings:

San Diego State 17-9, 7-5

Air Force 13-12, 5-7
TCU 13-12, 5-7
Wyoming 10-15, 3-9
Colorado State 6-19, 0-11
