Post Game From The Marriott
The BYU men's basketball team is all alone on top of the Mountain.
BYU's 83-72 victory over TCU tonight at the Marriott Center combined with Utah's victory over UNLV moves BYU into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West Conference.
The Cougars (18-5, 7-1) stretched their home-winning streak to 43 games behind a career-high tying 27 points from Trent Plaisted.
The biggest positive BYU took from its new position is being able to control its own destiny in its conference title defense. Jonathan Tavernari said it places an even bigger target on BYU's back.
Tavernari added 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting and a career-high five assists, which earned him more locker room cheers from his teammates. JT is thinking this unselfish thing ain't too bad. He bettered the career high he set last week at Air Force (4).
BYU was unselfish on offense in general with 27 assists on its 33 field goals. TCU head coach Neil Dougherty said he enjoys watching BYU play, "They play the way the game should be played. They get up and down with great intensity running their offense and defense. They move the ball about as well as any team you see around and that is any conference really."
But BYU head coach Dave Rose wasn't pleased with his team's selfish nature on defense, and made it a point to address that in the postgame comments. BYU allowed TCU to shoot 51.9 percent in the second half.
BYU completed the first round of MWC play and has a seven-day break before facing Colorado State on Feb. 13 in Fort Collins. It's supposed to be "Guys Night Out" up there because Valentine's Day for the ladies is the day after. At least, that is what I heard on the radio driving back to Denver from Laramie on Saturday night.
