Post Game From The Marriott
BYU made history with its 45th straight victory at the Marriott Center, but it wasn't easy.
Befitting this rivalry, it was another close one throughout as BYU held on for a 67-59 win. The Utes pulled to within a point twice in the second half and within two points three times, but BYU (21-5, 10-1) managed to hit crucial shots and free throws each time to weather the Utah (15-9, 6-5) charges.
Jonathan Tavernari led BYU with 20 points while Lee Cummard had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Jimmer Fredette displayed his big-game resiliency again with 14 points.
"You know you think of the last Utah game we maybe didn't shot as well as we would like and have too many turnovers, but we made enough plays to win and that shows a lot of character with this team of just being able to win close games," BYU senior guard Sam Burgess said. "That is a big deal because we know we are going to have close games in the future and I think it shows our experience."
BYU shot just 39.6 percent - an atypical Marriott performance - but limited Utah to just 37.3 percent and outrebounded the Utes 38-34. The Cougars cashed in at the free-throw line with 22 of 32 makes and Utah was just 9 of 10.

Tavernari unplugged again:
This time, JT entered the postgame press conference wearing all black from his turtleneck to his blazer to his slacks. "My mom said I look cute. I sent her a picture."
- Taking the one-game-at-a-time mentality to the extreme, "I don't know about no winning streak."
- "I don't know why we got a trophy for it," a puzzled Tavernari said after the win. BYU received a trophy for the Deseret First Duel sweep.
****
Short shots:
- Reserve Chris Miles came up with some big buckets. The sophomore center finished 2 of 3 from the field for five points, and helped get Utah center Luke Nevill into foul trouble. Nevill played only 21 minutes, and picked up his fourth foul midway through the second half.
- The Cougars have won nine straight games - their longest winning streak since 2003-04. At 10-1 in conference, BYU is still off to its best start since going 14-1 in the WAC in 1993.
- BYU swept the season series for the second straight season. It is the first time that has occurred since 1978-79, 1979-80.
- Fredette's 14 points were a conference high for him.
- Attendance was 19,460
