Rhiannon,
I was disappointed to hear that you will no longer be the BYU beat writer. You have done a fantastic job. Best of luck to you.
Dear Rhiannon,
When it comes to sports beat writers, you are the gold standard. YOU are a perfect ten.
I have not responded to the rumors that you are leaving Utah, and the BYU beat, because I wanted to hear it from you first. And, truth be told, I did not want to believe it was true. Unfortunately, I have since come across an email purported to have been written by you (please see below) that seems to confirm my worst fears.
I cannot adequately express my sincere gratitude, respect, and sadness.
You have demonstrated a level of professionalism that is quite rare. The quality of your reporting was outstanding. I doubt any sports writer in the country (at any level) worked harder or did a better job than you did. But, the aspect of your work that I appreciated the most was the great human decency that came through in your writing. And, the thought that you did it all while suffering from terrible migraine headaches touches my heart.
You have been a blessing to all of us. Your example will not be forgotten. May God watch over you, and bless you, guiding you to where you need to be. I like to believe that he has something wonderful in store for you somewhere out there on the horizon. Thinking of that brings a smile to my face, and helps me to hold back the moister forming in my eyes.
Sports are just games. You, however, are a precious child of God. I love you, sister. I will miss you.
Love, Your Friend,
A.W.

Thanks for writing, and sadlly the rumor is true. It was not by choice though. I had been getting migraines since I moved there - 2 a week for the last 11 months - and the doctors could not find a solution. They think it is something environmental because I don't get them in any other state. Anyway, the doctor said my heart would not be able to stand the stress of recovery from that many migraine attacks for much longer.
I was pretty bummed to say the least because I loved the BYU beat and the job. But I realize health takes precedence over work, and who knows how much longer I could have continued producing anything of substance in that state. As it is, I am still trying to get everything sorted out that went awry because of the toll the migraines took on my system.
Like I said, this is not a greener pastures sort of thing - although the paper I am going back to is great. But the BYU beat was my dream, and it provided me with a year of great joy professionally. I am sure the next reporter will be just as good if not better and you all will forget about me really quick.
Rhiannon
