Glad This One Got Away
The last name might have suggested otherwise, but I am sure everyone at BYU is glad Keni Kaufusi isn't a Cougar recruit.

Kaufusi, a 6-foot-2, 275-pound lineman from Cottonwood High who was expected to play at rival Utah this fall, was booked into the Salt Lake County jail on suspicion of unlawful gun possession and unlawful purchasing of alcohol after he was involved in an altercation during the weekend.

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham said yesterday the Utes have withdrawn the financial aid agreement for Kaufusi because of the incident. Kaufusi's mother is a reportedly a first cousin to BYU defensive line coach Steve Kaufusi.

According to the story in our paper this morning - http://www.sltrib.com/sports/ci_9462287 - "about 1 a.m. Saturday, deputies received a report of a large crowd spilling out of a nightclub and onto the streets near 6200 S. Highland Drive, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak.

One deputy saw about a half dozen people standing in a semicircle at a Wendy's drive-through window. The tallest of the group was Kaufusi, Jaroscak said, and the deputy saw him in a fighting stance, arguing with someone inside the drive-through.

The deputy saw Kaufusi reach into the window in an apparent effort to pull someone outside, Jaroscak said. When the deputy yelled at the group, everyone began to run, Jaroscak said.

The deputy chased Kaufusi and caught him as he reached a car. Kaufusi did not put up a struggle, Jaroscak said, but the deputy smelled alcohol on the 18-year-old. A field test confirmed Kaufusi had been drinking, Jaroscak said.

Deputies also searched the car. Jaroscak said they found a loaded semi-automatic pistol wrapped in a blue bandana. The jail released Kaufusi about two hours after he was booked."

I feel bad for this young man. He was given a wonderful opportunity to play college football--and gain a free education while doing so--that has now been lost.

If the accusations against him are true, I pray that he uses this experience as a wake-up call to get his act together. Another opportunity may come his way, if he's extremely, extremely lucky.

In the mean time, I hope that he will make himself ready, and do his part, so that he will not fail again. Life is not always so generous as to give us multiple "chances of a life time."

I agreewholeheartedly with alienated wannabe and I am concerned with the fact that this article, Glad This One Got Away, would even be mentioned in the Cougar Update. I think the article was disrespectful to Keni and his family and should not have been a part of the daily update.

I agree with the individual "byu/ldsconvert". This young mans mistakes are unfortunate but to put them on a flag pole and shine a spot light on it is in my opinion almost as bad as the young man's indiscretion. His family did not make any mistakes and to have their family name put in a negative light is wrong. There are always consequences to our choices and I am sure there will be in this case as well and I hope the outcome is a learning experience that moves him to a positive path rather than humliate his family.

Hmmm. This doesn't have the ring of a Rhiannon post. Are we sure someone isn't posting to this blog under her name?

No matter. It's a sad story, and I'm glad not to see BYU fans piling on. I read a story in the Deseret News that featured Keni Kaufusi's side. It all sounds like it could be a big misunderstanding.
