According to several newspaper accounts this morning, Alabama athletic director Dal Moore said Thursday that BYU will replace Alabama on Tulane's schedule for next year's season-opener.
Apparently, Alabama wants out of the game with Tulane so it can open the 2009 season in Atlanta against Virginia Tech. The athletic director said details are still being worked out.
BYU's involvement makes sense, because right now the Cougars have just three nonconference games lined up: Arizona State, Florida State and Utah State.
That would stay within the current trend of playing two BCS teams (ASU, FSU), a respectable mid-major (Tulane) and Utah State.
The Cougars just announced they will play Nevada in 2010 (along with Washington, FSU and Utah State), so it is possible a home game with Tulane could be added to the 2011, 2012 or 2013 schedule as a visitor to LaVell Edwards Stadium.
BYU practices twice today, at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., and I will ask coach Bronco Mendenhall after the morning session if there is any truth to what the Alabama A.D. said about BYU playing Tulane.
Stay tuned.

Guess that means USU is not a "respectable" mid-major...
I don't think anyone, anywhere is making the argument that USU is a respectable mid-major.
I am a Tulane season ticket holder. There is nothing more sad than seeing the Superdome (capacity: 70,000) with only 2,000 fans scattered around in it. Tulane, sadly, is not a better program than USU. BYU can get revenge for the '98 Liberty Bowl.
