Kicker Sorensen won't redshirt, Mendenhall says
Students are a few weeks away from arriving on campus for the 2008-09 school year, but BYU is hoping today because it is graduation for students who went to summer school.

Maybe that's why it was so hard to find a parking spot near the Student Athlete Building today.

The Cougars will start another practice session at 5 p.m., but before then, here are a few odds and ends from this morning's practice.

* Coach Bronco Mendenhall won't say who will redshirt before the season starts this year (as in past years), having changed his policy in that regard over the offseason. However, he will say who won't redshirt, apparently.

He said no when asked this morning if freshman kicker Justin Sorensen will redshirt. In fact, he reiterated that Sorensen could see the field a lot.

"It very well might be that it could be Mitch [Payne] from short to mid field goal range, Just as a kickoff and long field goal guy, based on how the numbers play out. If Justin ends up kicking well on the short to mid-range field goals, then he might be doing it all," Mendenhall said.

* Safety Andrew Rich continues to work his way into the consciousness of the coaches as he battles to be a starter before opening day.

"With Andrew Rich, the way he played while David [Tafuna] was hurt, we have a lot of trust in Andrew Rich," Mendenhall said. "And that could be for both Kellen [Fowler] or David -- it is not one or the other. He is, I think, pushing both."

There is also a good battle going on to be the fourth safety among freshman Shiloah Te'o, redshirt freshman Jordan Pendleton and freshman Daniel Sorensen, Mendenhall said. Friday morning, Daniel Sorensen ran with the twos, Pendleton ran with the threes and Te'o didn't see much action at all.

Mendenhall had an interesting answer today when he was asked if he has changed in four years in his regard for disciplining student-athletes. Here's what he said:

"It is easier to leave things here. The first three years -- and I am not saying I can completely separate it, but when I get home, I am not agonizing as much over things that are pending here.

"If I choose to discipline a young man, it is done and out of my head. Before, it would linger and tear away [at me] and I was [always thinking] about the best way to handle it.

"I have learned enough to maybe have a little more confidence [in discipline decisions], and go home to my family and not worry about it."
