Eight BYU women's volleyball players earn All-MWC Academic honors
Here's BYU release on its eight women's volleyball players who have been honored by the Mountain West Conference for their achievements in the classroom.
PROVO, Utah (Feb. 2, 2009) - Eight BYU women's volleyball players have been honored by the Mountain West Conference for their contributions in the classroom last semester, earning Academic All-MWC accolades.
Junior middle blocker Ashton Hansen Hosford paced the volleyball honorees with a 3.96 GPA in elementary education. Sophomore walk-on Melissa Lake was right behind with a 3.90 in fitness and wellness management while senior Rachel Dyer earned a 3.72 in post-baccalaureate studies as she finished her volleyball career.
Other award winners included Stephanie Lau (3.45 - communications studies), Morgan Lloyd (3.26 - exercise and wellness), Christina Measom (3.10 - human development), Bryn Porter (3.33 - art history and curatorial studies) and Kayla Walker (3.16 - teaching social science).
Walker and Dyer impressed both on and off the court as the pair also earned All-MWC recognition. Dyer finished the year fifth in the league and first for the Cougars with a .316 hitting percentage. She was also second on the team and ninth in the conference averaging 1.09 blocks per set. Walker was a major contributor for BYU in just her first season with the team as she led the Cougars with 3.03 kills per set, which also ranked sixth in the league, and came in fourth in blocks (0.91) and fifth in digs (2.10).
BYU led the conference with a total of 72 Cougars named Academic All-MWC, 21 more student-athletes than any other MWC institution. Utah followed with 51 athletes honored, followed by New Mexico (47), UNLV and TCU (45), Wyoming (38), Air Force (35) Colorado State (29) and San Diego State (22).
To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
