Offensive lineman Jason Speredon, the projected starter at left guard, is out for the season with a shoulder injury.
Speredon, who has already undergone five major surgeries in his BYU football career, suffered a rotator cuff tear in Thursday's practice, an MRI on Friday revealed.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall said Speredon will be out three to five months to recover, effectively ending his chance to play this season.
"He didn't act like it was that severe [on Thursday], but it was, so, we had a long chat in my office today," Mendenhalll said. "It's [bad], because he has had such a fantastic offseason and a really nice start to fall camp.
"So he is having to do some adjusting right now, and our team is, too."
Redshirt freshman Marco Thorson will take Speredon's place as the starter.
The injury to Speredon, coupled with the hand injury left tackle Matt Reynolds suffered earlier this week, means the Cougars could go into the Oklahoma game with two redshirt freshmen starting on the left side of their offensive line.
Speredon also missed a year earlier in his career with a ruptured Achilles' tendon, so it is likely he will get the year back and still have two more seasons to play.
Trainer Kevin Morris said it is a rare injury and even he was surprised by the results from the MRI. Morris said there's a "great chance" for a full recovery.

Friday night's practice was scheduled to be held outside and open to the public. However, the threat of lightning caused officials to move the practice indoors and close it to the public.
Mendenhall said that another evening practice -- he's not sure which -- will now be opened to the public.
