Cougs satisfied with 42-23 win over CSU
The Cougars didn't thoroughly dominate Colorado State tonight as a 42-23 final score suggests, but generally they were pleased with the way they played in the victory at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

"Mountain West Conference football is difficult, and we had a convincing win, so I was happy with the outcome," coach Bronco Mendenhall said.

The Cougs won easily despite giving up 438 yards of offense. They had 373 yards themselves, but the difference there was average yards per play.

Running 15 fewer plays than CSU, BYU averaged 5.9 yards per play and the Rams 5.6.

"We still need work as a football program," Mendenhall said. "It's a good team. If we make the right plays in the right games at the right times, we can be a great team."

I will have plenty more from Mendenhall tomorrow. For now, though, here's some of what CSU coach Steve Fairchild had to say:

"You guys saw it," Fairchild said. ""We didn't show up ready to play. That's on me. I did not have the team ready to compete in a game like this. I did a job I'm embarrassed of tonight. You just can't do the things we did on offense and special teams in the first quarter and expect to be in the game."

Fairchild said the Rams are a better team than they showed in the first quarter.

"We dug ourselves a hole and obviously we have got to get off to a better start. Once we went down that road I knew it was going to be a difficult afternoon."

Fairchild was not in a mood to talk about BYU.

"I'm more concerned with our team," he said. "I thought I had us ready to play but obviously I didn't. I'm disappointed with how the team I coach played today."

A few final stats:

BYU quarterback Max Hall was 18-for-29 for 241 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted twice and sacked twice.

BYU running back Harvey Unga had 113 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.

BYU receiver O'Neill Chambers -- in perhaps his best game as a Cougar -- had three catches for 70 yards. He also had three kickoff returns for 69 yards.

Colorado State quarterback Grant Stucker was 30-for-50 for 372 yards and two touchdowns. He was also picked off twice and sacked twice.

Safety Scott Johnson led the Cougars with 12 tackles, and Andrew Rich added 10. Coleby Clawson and Vic So'oto had sacks.
