Mendenhall is a Utah fan on Nov. 14
Make no mistake about it. BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall will be cheering for the University of Utah when the Utes (No. 14 in the BCS standings) take on No. 6 TCU, even though TCU has a much better chance of making it to a BCS bowl game.
The Utes and Horned Frogs meet on Nov. 14, the same day that BYU is playing at New Mexico.
Mendenhall is still holding out hope of getting at least a piece of the conference championship, and the only way that can seemingly happen is if Utah knocks off TCU and then BYU beats Utah in the regular-season finale in Provo.
“If [TCU] happens to win out and play very well, it puts the conference on a very national stage, and in the spotlight,” Mendenhall allowed at his Monday news conference. “Our first goal is conference championships, though. I would love to see somebody play well enough in a given game [and beat TCU], to possibly give us a chance that if we do play well the next four weeks to have a dhance at that [conference title].
“So there is a trade-off there. But I am responsible for our program, first and foremost. So to me, I would like to make the tradeoff of giving us a share of the conference championship, if we can play well enough to earn it.”
That’s not to say the Cougars will have an easy time before they get to Utah. Mendenhall praised Wyoming relentlessly on Monday, and said the Cowboys have the kind of team, because of their defense, to topple a conference leader, as they showed Saturday in a close loss to Utah.
