Bronco asks players to recommit themselves
BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall said he asked his players to “recommit” themselves to the program during the bye week, and said that they have not reached their potential yet.
Responding to a question during the MWC football coaches teleconference earlier today, the coach said the Cougs have not peaked yet, as a team or a program.
Recommitment “is something that has been emphasized,” he said “But more importantly, just something that was asked for by me. I asked the players for that, simply from the standpoint that I don’t think we have reached our potential yet.
“To have this team reach its potential, as with any team I coach, I would like to see progress and growth happen in all areas. I just asked them to acknowledge the time frame remaining, with the work to be done, and they have responded very well, in terms of practice and just how they are supporting each other and playing hard.
“I am optimistic about the way they will respond and continue to work.”

The Cougars have said that they were never the same team after losing to TCU last year. Will things be different this time around?
“I would say there haven’t been many similarities other than disappointment right after the game that we didn’t play as well as we would have hoped,” Mendenhall said. “Differences wise, it is not nearly as lingering.
“There were a couple years worth of building up to that game a year ago. This year, by simply lessons that I have learned in being a head coach.....that was one of the valuable lessons we learned, with a lot more football to play, not only this year, but year’s to come. we are still looking to improve. So I think that is helping the team move forward.”
