Domino's update
I sent my husband over to the Domino's pizza near our house and they cheerfully provided after a short wait a free full-size "Bread Bowl Pasta" I had blogged yesterday about. I had my doubts about Domino's pulling off this promotion, but they did. The Domino's freebie is good only until 2 p.m.
Arby's is still at it
Arby's has been giving away free "Roast Burgers" for a month now. Their latest promotion: Text "ROASTBURGER" to ARBYS (27297) and you'll get coupon on cell phone for free Roastburger with any soft drink. Show your phone to redeem.
Another Redbox code
I was at Walgreen's last night getting more free stuff and they were giving out flyers with a free Redbox code good at any Walgreen's location. The code is DVDATWAG. Remember, this code is good only at Redbox locations that are located at Walgreen's stores. But it's good any day of the week.
Never heard of Redbox codes before? The movie rental company provides a free rental code each Monday as a way to promote its movie-rental service. I post that code here. You can use one code per credit card account. For more about Redbox codes, read this.

Dell computer settlement deadline nears
Time is running out to claim part of a settlement with computer maker Dell. Utah consumers who purchased computer products from Dell between April 2005 and January 29, 2009 may be eligible for a refund if they experienced problems with the companies’ financing promotions, rebate offers, technical support and/or repair policies. (Residents of other states should check with their state Attorney General's office for settlement information.) Consumers in Utah may apply with the Utah Division of Consumer Protection before May 29 to be included in the settlement. Check to see whether you qualify for any settlement money.

New $5 promotion at T.G.I. Friday's
T.G.I Friday's succumbs to the pressure to create a "value" menu for recession-weary diners. Read about it here.
It's worth a try
Domino's did not return my inquiries today about their free offer Wednesday (the 29th). Nor is there any mention of it on their web site. But I did get an e-mail saying that the chain is offering a free carry-out order of their new Bread Bowl Pasta product between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. tomorrow. In any case, it's worth a call to your nearest location to see if they are participating in this promotion.
Free music and other free stuff every Tuesday
Our technologically saavy movie reviewer Sean P. Means let me know about another music-related freebie today for those with an iTunes account. Each Tuesday, iTunes offers up a free song as well as other interesting files to download at no cost. Go to the iTunes web site and click on "Free Single of the Week" at the very bottom of the page. This week, the song is called "Nada" and it's by a group called Zoe. For a host of other free things to listen to (and watch) read this.
Staples has a free offer for job-seekers too
I blogged last week about Office Depot's free offer for those looking for a job. The chain is offering free resume printing and faxing services through May 30.
Now Staples has its own offer, it's a pretty good one too. Free resume copies and business cards. Read the details of this offer here.
These two offers come after FedEx offered free resume printing. (The offer is now expired.) and Franklin Covey offered free day planners. That giveaway also has ended.

Something every home buyer should see
There's a little known report that I would request from the seller of any used home I was interested in buying. It's called the Home Seller's Disclosure Report, and it's available for about $20 from data provider ChoicePoint. It provides a 5-year loss history on a property. Did the seller make multiple claims on their homeowner's policy for water damage? How about claims for fire or wind damage, or for roof repairs? This report will detail that information.
ChoicePoint has a bunch of other nifty reports, including the CLUE report, which is free. CLUE stands for Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange. The CLUE report details some of the key information that homeowner's and auto insurance providers use to set your rates. You can get one free report each year covering both areas. You can order the CLUE report online at the ChoicePoint web site. Click on CLUE report, provide some identifying information and you'll be able to view your report and print it out.

My Most Excellent Adventure to Walgreens and Rite Aid
I have a friend who gets loads of free (or nearly free) stuff from Walgreens and Rite Aid using their rebate/register rewards programs.
But I always thought that the whole pharmacy rebate process seemed, well, a bit mysterious and complex. Until today, that is, when I decided to give it a try myself.
My first stop was Walgreens, which has a Register Rewards program. Basically, you buy an item and get a voucher good for a specific amount of store credit. These deals are in the Walgreens ad in the Sunday newspaper.
I decided to start small, picking a couple of items that I could get for free or nearly free.
At Walgreens, I purchased a container of Nivea Body Wash for $4.99 and got a $5 voucher good off my next purchase at the store, making the purchase effectively free. (Although I did have to pay tax.) I also purchased a tube of Rembrandt toothpaste for $5.99 and got a $6 voucher good off my next purchase. See how nicely this works?
With the $11 of in-store credit I got today, I'll go to Walgreens again next week and buy more things I want and get more Register Rewards. The cycle goes on and on. The savviest shoppers eventually get to the point where they don't spend anything - or hardly anything - each week.
The next stop was Rite Aid, which has a rebate program. While you don't get the store credit immediately, Rite Aid's rebate program is fairly easy to use because you can submit rebate requests via the Internet. The company then sends you a Rite Aid gift certificate.
At Rite Aid, I wanted three items that I had seen in the Sunday newspaper advertisement. First was a sinus and allergy relief remedy for $6.99 that had a $6.99 rebate, making it effectively free. Next was some shaving cream for $2.99. The rebate was for only $2.24, but I had a 75-cent manufacturer's coupon from the newspaper (yes, you can use coupons with these programs!) which made that product effectively free. Lastly, I purchased some Electrasol Automatic Dishwasher Detergent on sale for $4.49. The rebate was for only $1.50, which would have brought the net cost down to only $2.99. But I had a $2.50 manufacturer's coupon, which brought the net cost down to $0.49.
I didn't spend much gasoline just to drive to these two stores - I was on my way to grocery shop anyway. The grand total of time spent in both stores was 35 minutes, and once home, I spent 5 minutes logging on to the Internet and submitting my Rite Aid rebate. Combine that with the prep work, and I spent a total of about an hour. All in all, I feel going to the two stores on a weekly basis is probably worth my time.
One way to make these programs work even better: Don't throw away the coupons from the Sunday newspaper that you don't clip immediately. Keep them in a file so that you have them handy in the event of a really great rebate program. And one more tip: Each week, the CouponCravings.com web site highlights the best rebate/Register Rewards deals you can get at Walgreens and Rite Aid. This site not only shows you the best deals, but provides links to coupons that can make them even better. Check it out before you shop every week!

Free meal at El Pollo Loco
El Pollo Loco is offering up a free meal on Tuesday, April 28. For details, go here. Type your Zip code into the store locator at the top of the page. I paid a late fee on my credit card
I am absolutely meticulous about paying my bills, and never in my life have I paid a late fee on a credit card.
Until this month.
I sent off my credit card bill last month paying the entire balance as I always do, with plenty of time to spare. Only my check didn't get to the bank until a week after the due date. What caused the delay? I still don't know. I didn't even know it had arrived late until I opened this month's statement and saw the $15 late fee. The fee, plus $1 in interest, was slapped on a card that had only a single charge of about $10 on it to start with.
I called the credit card company and told them what had happened, and even after asking to talk to two different supervisors, I was unsuccessful in getting the fee waived.
So I swallowed my pride and paid the fee.
I called a few credit experts who said what happened to me should serve as a warning to all consumers who use credit cards. Credit card companies are reeling from losses and are less flexible than they used to be, even for good or great customers.
And late payments are a big issue right now.
I've heard from a number of readers in the past month who have made a late payment, only to have their credit-card company slash their spending limit and/or substantially increase their interest rate.
One reader said the credit card company lowered his credit limit and then charged him a fee for carrying a balance over his limit. (He wasn't even over his limit until it was lowered.)
In any case, now, more than ever, it is important to make your payments on time. If you can, go into a bank branch to make a credit card payment instead of sending it in the mail. You'll get a receipt on the spot. Or pay your bill online. And actually read those disclosures that come in the mail. Any changes that have been made to your account will be there. And trust me - you're going to want to know what your credit-card company is up to.
What's the difference between a necessity and a luxury item?
No longer are microwave ovens, television sets and home air conditioning systems seen as necessities by many Americans, a new study by the Pew Research Center shows. According to the study, people also are taking numerous steps to cut back spending these days, including shopping at discount stores, buying less expensive brands, scaling back or canceling cable TV, planting vegetable gardens and doing yard work or other things that they used to pay someone else to do.
Two phone related freebies
I found these two phone-related freebies in the Bottom Line Personal newsletter, which contains a lot of interesting tidbits about a wide range of topics.
The first is Trapcall.com, which enables you to find out who called you, even if they called from a blocked line, and to block unwanted callers. The service has other features as well.

The newsletter also mentioned Google Voice, which will soon be available to the general public for free as well. Google describes Voice as a service that "gives you one number for all your phones, voicemail that is easy as email, and many enhanced calling features like call blocking and screening, voicemail transcripts, call conferencing, international calls, and more." If you provide your e-mail, Google will notify you when the free service is available. For more information about Google Voice, go here.

It was nice while it lasted
Utah no longer has low-priced gasoline. For quite a while now, Utah has had either the lowest gas prices or the second-lowest prices nationwide. Now, 30 states have lower prices, according to travel-services agency AAA, which tracks gas prices nationally. The average cost of a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Utah is $2.09, which is now just three pennies shy of the national average of $2.06. (For a state by state comparison, go here.) Economists predict gasoline to creep up to the $2.30 range by summer. Gasoline always tends to rise during the warm months when many families hit the road on summer vacations.
The good news is that shopping around can yield significant savings. Go to Gasbuddy.com or SaltLakeGasPrices.com to find low gas prices in your area. After consulting SaltLakeGasPrices.com, I discovered stations selling unleaded fuel today as low as $1.91 per gallon and some as high as $2.22 per gallon.

Home Depot accepts competitor's coupons
Frugal blogger Heather who shares her expertise on the Freebies4mom web site mentioned on Twitter the other day that Home Depot accepts competitor's coupons. (The only coupons they do not accept are the ones you print off the Internet.) My husband tested the policy by taking a $5 off Ace Hardware coupon from the Entertainment book and a $10 off coupon from Lowe's we received in the mail. They accepted both on separate orders.
It never hurts to inquire about ad-matching (I ad-match grocery items at Wal-Mart regularly) or whether a retailer will accept a coupon from a competing store.

Teach kids about money with the help of these web sites
Kiplinger's is one of my favorite magazines. It recently published a list of web sites that can help you teach kids of all ages about money. Plus, there are links to recent articles on kids and money. I think the key message here is to start teaching kids early about money as early as possible. Teach them about making financial choices and why it's always important to save at least some of your money. Have them help you clip coupons and look through grocery ads for good deals. If they have a little bit of birthday money, take them to a thrift store or garage sale and a regular store so they can see the difference in prices. Every little bit helps.

Do you have one of these coffee makers?

About 155,000 Philips Senseo One-Cup Coffeemakers are being recalled. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, an electrical fault and the build-up of calcium from hard water can cause an obstruction in the coffee maker. As a result, the boiler can burst, posing a burn hazard to consumers. The coffee maker was sold at Wal-Mart, Target and Safeway stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com between July 2006 through March 2009 for between $60 and $140. For additional information, contact Philips toll-free at (866) 604-0051 between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. ET Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Sundays. Consumers can also visit the firm’s Web site at www.senseoexchange.com

Economic "survivalism"
I knew I would find a good excuse someday to put a chicken photo on my blog. Well, I finally have one. Apparently folks who have farm animals, grow their own food and preserve fresh produce like I do are considered "economic survivalists," according to an article in USA TODAY.
Don't have a lot of property? No problem. You may not be able to have the animals, but there are plenty of ways to garden in small areas, even in containers. And as far as canning goes, if a domestically impaired person like myself can learn to do it, anyone can learn.

Kentucky "Grilled" Chicken freebie

Kentucky Fried Chicken would like you to try a piece of their new grilled chicken on April 27.
The fine print: At "participating" KFC restaurants, one piece person.
A great story about frugality
Check out this story about a retired public school social worker who amassed a $1.4 million fortune before her death at age 84. What's interesting about this story is that while the woman did live frugally and she saved a lot of money, she also enjoyed some of it. (She went to Europe and she bought a baby grand piano, for example.) And she gave back to the community. This story shows that frugal living is not only about doing without or hoarding all your money. It's about making a pledge to save money and making choices with your disposable income (instead of buying everything you want.)
Don't Forget These Tax Day Freebies today
MaggieMoo's is giving away free single-serve ice cream cones today (April 15), also known as Tax Day. The chain has four Utah locations. Find them here.
Cinnabon has something sweet for you today, too.
P.F. Chang's is offering 15 percent off (on the 15th, get it?)
Some locations of national food chains participate in promotions, others do not, so it's always a good idea to check to see if a location is "participating" before you go. Hours of a promotion also can vary from store to store.

Other freebies in April:
Free cone from Ben & Jerry's on April 21.
Free pretzels on National Pretzel Day, April 26.

Free Redbox rentals, any day of the week?
I've blogged before about sites such as RetailMeNot.com and CurrentCodes.com, which contain collections of different discount codes you can use when shopping online. Today, I stumbled upon InsideRedBox.com, which contains — you guessed it, codes for use at RedBox movie rental kiosks. Each Monday, RedBox releases a code for use by anyone who wants a free rental as part of a promotion designed to boost awareness of its rental business. But the code is only good on Mondays. (I post these codes early Monday mornings on this site and on Twitter.) The InsideRedBox.com site contains codes that can be used other days of the week as well. I recognized one of them — BREAKROOM. This is a code that has been e-mailed to those who sign up at the official RedBox site for the company's promotional offers. I got the code a few weeks ago and used it to get a free rental. Check it out and tell me what you think.
Another Earth Day freebie
Bring in three plastic bottles to The Disney Store on April 22, and they will give you a free gift.
There is one Disney Store left in Utah, in University Mall in Orem. It's a little more fun than the free light bulbs Home Depot will be handing out in observance of Earth Day.

Having mortgage trouble?
As part of the national economic stimulus plan, the federal government has created a program designed to help struggling homeowners who can't refinance into more affordable fixed-rate loans because they don't have enough equity in their properties or because they owe more than their properties are worth. But where are the details? Go here for more information about the "Making Home Affordable" program. Want even more information about the stimulus and how it affects you? Go to FinancialStability.gov.
Take this quiz
In honor of Financial Literacy Month, here's a timeless quiz from LendingTree designed to help consumers see just how much (or little) they know about the basics of personal finance.

Learn more about your credit record at this free seminar

Your credit record can affect what interest rate you pay on your credit card, how low of a mortgage rate you're able to get and even what you will pay for insurance. Learn more about your credit record and even better, the ever important debt-to-income ratio, which is one key way of measuring your overall financial health. This seminar offered by AAA Fair Credit Foundation, is on Wednesday, April 22. Check it out here. Registration is available online.
Redbox code of the day
Use code J89LA2 to get a free Redbox rental, today only. I just went and got the movie Bolt for the kids.
I have received a couple of e-mails from people who have had trouble with Redbox codes.
Just remember: These codes are good for one day only. This particular code is good only today (Monday, April 13) ONLY. If you try using it any other day, it won't work.
To use the code at a Redbox kiosk: Select “Rent With Promo," then enter the code, select your movie and swipe your debit or credit card. A $1 charge may go on your card, but it's removed if you return the movie on time the next day. In other cases, there is just no charge at all.
Never heard of Redbox codes before? The movie rental company provides a free rental code each Monday to drum up business on a slow day. (It also had this promotion on Wednesdays for a while) You can use one code per credit card account.
Earth Day Freebie

Home Depot wants you to have an environmentally friendly light bulb for free on April 19.
It's an EcoSmart 14w CFL bulb from "participating" Home Depot stores. Limit one per customer while quantities last. No purchase necessary.
Watch what you buy
While shopping in a Salt Lake area thrift shop recently, I found this toy. It's an Easy Bake oven, a style that was recalled some time ago by the federal government. This is definitely something you don't want your kids to play with. If your friends give you their used children's items, or you shop at thrift stores, garage sales or any other outlet that sells secondhand goods, familiarize yourself with the CPSC and their web site, cpsc.gov. Stores are supposed to watch for these products, but many end up being sold anyway. (I've also seen recalled toys at garage sales.) Never buy a crib or bassinet unless you check with the agency first. It's also a good idea to consult the site periodically, because even things you purchased new could eventually be recalled. And even if you don't have kids, log on to the site and you'll see recalls for a wide range of products. You can search for recalls many different ways using the agency's tool here.

Free breakfast at IKEA - it's baaaack

Starts Friday, April 17. Read about it here. The freebie is the standard 99-cent breakfast pictured here plus a cup of coffee. Also check out the cheap (all you can eat) pasta dinner on Monday nights. Gotta love that price.
I had a visit from an energy auditor
In this Sunday's newspaper, I have a story about state and federal incentives that help defray the cost of making energy-efficient upgrades to your home. As part of that story, I had a visit from an energy auditor from Questar Gas, Norm Bateman. The cost for an audit from Questar is $25, but it's well worth the cost. (You even get the money back if you invest in certain upgrades.) We got a detailed report on what possible upgrades could be done to our home and any incentives that are available that could help cover part of the cost of making them. He helped us realize how little changes, such as upgrading our door seals and insulating some pipes, could make a big difference. For more information on the audits, go here.
A cross between eBay and Freecycle.com?
It's FreeNapkin.com, and I'm not sure what to make of it. But it does have some stuff in Utah that people are trying to give away, so I thought I'd share it with you!

Should you refinance?

I have been getting a lot of calls and e-mails from readers lately asking whether they should refinance. The general rule is to consider refinancing if you can get a rate around 1 percent lower than the rate on your current loan. But some are wondering if rates are going to fall even further. Rates already are at record lows. The government, however, is taking extraordinary actions to help the economy that could push rates even lower. In fact, the U.S. housing chief predicted even lower rates Thursday.
There are costs involved in refinancing, of course, and you can either pay the several thousands of dollars in closing costs in cash or have it rolled into your loan amount. Either way, it's useful to figure out if the expense of refinancing is worth the savings you'll get from having a lower rate. (This calculator from Bankrate.com can help.)
Remember that even if you want to refinance, you may not be able to. In an era of tighter lending standards, I hear from people who are being denied credit all the time now. Your efforts to refinance may be thwarted if your home has lost too much of its value (or you tapped too much home equity in recent years), your household income has dropped substantially or your credit has taken a turn for the worse.
And the winner is ...
Nancy Taylor has won the Playstation 2 game and book in my first blog giveaway. Congratulations, Nancy!
Her family is trying to save money this month by trying not to spend any money other than paying their bills and filling their cars with gasoline.
Money-saving suggestions from other readers include planting a vegetable garden each year, buying groceries with coupons when they are on sale, bringing a home lunch to the office, shopping end of the season clearance sales and capitalizing on Wal-Mart's ad-matching policy, among others. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed ideas.
I'm already scouring the newsroom for something to give away next. Stay tuned!

Turn off that TV
Most people think that I have some pretty extreme opinions on frugality. For example, I believe that if you can't pay cash for a vehicle, you can't truly afford it. (That's why I'm still driving my reliable old Toyota that has been driven more than 150,000 miles.) I believe people have no business buying things like big-screen televisions, furniture and electronics on credit cards at 18 percent interest. I believe families should scrimp and save until they have six to eight months of living expenses socked away for emergencies.
For years, many people thought I was off my rocker. Now amid the nation's economic crisis, many people are more tolerant of these views.
Expect for one area — my views on television.
While my husband and I watch a little television now and then, my children don't watch TV. We do allow them to watch movies now and then, or something child-oriented on a DVD. But no TV.
Why? First, I want them to learn that there's so many other things they could be doing than sitting in front of the tube. And second, I believe TV indoctrinates children early to want the next big toy, the newest sugary cereal or the latest in fashion. Before they start watching TV, I want them to learn how commercials work, what really counts in life and that a new zippy car or the latest electronics gadget isn't really what is going to make them happy. (Even though all the people in commercials sure look happy.)
What else do they do with their time? They play with building toys, read, do art projects or play board games. (Thrift shops are an excellent source of educational toys and books.) They play outside. As a family, we hike and we letterbox.
I'm sure someday, when they're older, they are going to want to watch TV. And that's fine with me. But it's my hope that by keeping the TV off for most of their childhood, they will have learned there's a heck of a lot more interesting things they could be doing with their time.
For another perspective, read the "Frugal Dad's 12 Reasons To Turn off the TV."
Do you have a GE Profile range in your kitchen?

Do you get coupons on your mobile device?
You may want to start getting coupons on your mobile device after checking out the FrogZog.com web site. Online expert extraordinaire Kim McDaniel (who has patiently guided my clumsy efforts on Twitter) discovered this site after a recent visit to Costa Vida, a restaurant company that offers coupons via mobile devices and in print. I found a buy-one-get-one free at Quiznos and a $5 off $25 purchase at Winger's, among other offers. Costa Vida is offering coupons good for $2 off a burrito or a free drink with entree purchase. To get coupons, type in keywords such as food, lunch, dinner or fun, and your Zip code.
How about grocery coupons on your cell phone? Check out Cellfire.com.
More free films
I recently blogged about the site snagfilms.com, which has free full-length documentaries available for viewing, including Super Size Me, the 2004 independent film about one man's experiences eating only at McDonald's for one month.
Here's one I should have mentioned too, according to a big fan of free movies and TV shows. Hulu.com. Check it out!
My First Blog Giveaway
We don't really get any good freebies in the business department, unless you enjoy books about the stock market plummeting. So I had to scour the rest of the newsroom for something good to give away on my blog. Here's what I ended up with: A copy of PlayStation 2 Monsters vs Aliens.
I'm also throwing in a copy of "I Will Teach You To Be Rich," a book about getting your financial house in order. To win these items, e-mail me at lesley@sltrib.com with one of your favorite ways to save money. Include the words "Blog Giveaway" in the subject line. We'll do a random drawing of all the e-mails I get by noon Thursday (April 9). On Friday, I'll share some of your money-saving tips and announce the winner of the drawing.
Denny's promotion set for tomorrow
Just a reminder: Denny's on Wednesday (April 8) has a buy one get one free offer. Buy a Grand Slam breakfast entree and your dining companion will get a free Grand "Slamwich," a new breakfast sandwich. As always, check beforehand to see if a location is "participating" before you go. (Nearly all U.S. locations are part of this promotion.)
Free admission to Lehi museum Friday
The John Hutchings Museum of Natural History in Lehi has free admission on Friday (April 10.) Get details about the museum and the free admission offer here. The museum opens at 11 a.m. that day, but from 4-9 p.m. it will have family-oriented activities as part of Lehi's community Easter celebration. I called the museum and they said the free admission offer is good all day, not just during the celebration.

Frugal yet fascinating fun
As a family, we love to hike - it's not only a fairly frugal hobby, it's fun and good exercise too. Last year, we discovered something even more fun. Letterboxing. It's like geocaching, but you don't need a GPS. You follow a set of clues and try to find a box hidden in a particular area. This is fun for adults and even small children and there are boxes hidden all along the Wasatch Front and throughout the country. Go to this web site to learn more about letterboxing.
Free coffee at Seattle's Best tomorrow
Seattle's Best coffee is giving away free small cups of coffee Monday in celebration of its anniversary. It also is offering up a number of other anniversary specials. Check out all the other specials, including a buy-one-get-one free coupon, free coffee for 39-year-olds and 39-cent cups of its anniversary roast. Thoughts on the Entertainment coupon book
All 2009 Entertainment coupon books have been reduced to $15, with free shipping. If you do most of your shopping at Smith's, this book could be a good deal for you. Each Utah book has a coupon good for $5 off a minimum purchase of $60 at Smith's, one for each month through the end of the year. The January, February and March coupons are now expired, of course, but there's the rest of the year, for a total savings of $45, which more than pays for the cost of the book.
Is there somewhere else in the country you spend a lot of time throughout the year, or where you spend the summer? Consider buying a book for that area as well. These books contain a variety of two-for-one offers at restaurants and attractions and discounts on hotels, car rentals and at online retailers.
Astronomy celebration
Want to learn more about astronomy? Check out the schedule of events for the 100 Hours of Astronomy Celebration on Clark Planetarium's web site. There's some free stuff in there to keep you entertained tonight and tomorrow night. Note the limited supply of free tickets to the planetarium's Night Vision show.
Free Credit Report Confusion
Several readers have e-mailed me over the past month asking, "What's the deal with FreeCreditReport.com? Is it the real deal?
The site has been advertised heavily over the past month, and I have seen the ads on television myself. Here are the facts:
The only site where consumers can order a truly free copy of their credit report is AnnualCreditReport.com. This site was set up to comply with a federal law requiring Experian, Equifax and TransUnion to provide consumers with one free credit report annually. That means you could go to this one site every four months and get a free report from a different bureau.
FreeCreditReport.com, on the other hand, is operated by one credit bureau, Experian, which is trying to get you to sign up for its "credit-monitoring service" that runs $14.95 per month.
So that free credit report they are crowing about is not truly "free" after all, unless you cancel the credit-monitoring service before they start billing you. But you have only one week - seven days - to do that, according to their web site.
So if you're looking for a truly free credit report, go right to AnnualCreditReport.com.
Grand Opening at Dick's Market in Layton

Free events for the kids Saturday (4/4)
Arts and crafts store Michaels has a free craft-oriented event for kids. Details are here.
Kids can make a window-mounted bird house at Home Depot. Details are here.
As always, it's a good idea to call a store convenient to you the day before the event. The free clinics offered by Home Depot and Lowe's tend to fill up fast, and some locations require children to be signed up in advance.
Toys R Us also has an Easter celebration on Saturday. Call your local store for details of this event.
Free admission offer from Disney for military families
I blogged yesterday about the fact that members of the military and as many as three direct dependents can get single-day free admission to any of Anheuser-Busch's SeaWorld, Busch Gardens or Sesame Place parks.
I found this great admission offer from Disney for military families on the couponcravings.com web site.

Sundance freebie
Didn't make it to Sundance this year? Tomorrow, (April 4) the Sundance Institute Film Series will present free screenings of nine short films designed to showcase the work of new and established directors, all whom have a connection to Sundance Film Festival. Old Navy coupon site update
It's getting a bit weird when an Old Navy "modelquin" starts leaving comments on your blog. Well, anyway, here's the update on oldnavyweekly.com, the site where Old Navy hides printable coupons for use in their stores. The company plans to reload the site sometime Friday with new coupons. One word of warning: The coupons are much trickier to find now than when the company first began hiding coupons.

UPDATE: Coupons have been reset!
Party on the cheap

Things we pay too much for

Here's a fun list from CBS News of things we buy regularly that have a HUGE markup. (In other words, things that we should really try to resist buying!)

How long will it take to pay off my credit card balance?
The Federal Trade Commission has a new calculator. Just plug in your balance and annual percentage rate here.
Utah (still) has the second-lowest gas prices in nation
The average cost of a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Utah has risen 13 cents over the past month to $1.87, but the state still has the second-lowest pump prices in the country.
Utah is tied with New Jersey as second-lowest in the nation. Only Wyoming, with an unleaded average of $1.86 per gallon, is lower.
The national average? Over the $2 mark at $2.05 per unleaded gallon, up 12 cents from one month ago.
Gas prices in Utah and the rest of the country are rising as they typically do each spring as the summer driving season nears. Other factors, such as higher oil prices and efforts by oil-producing countries to keep supplies in check, are other factors.
In any case, there's plenty of places to go on the web for gas price information
They include: Utahgasprices.com, SaltLakegasprices.com and for national prices, gasbuddy.com.
To see how your state stacks up with the rest of the country, go to AAA's "Fuel Gauge Report." (Click on "State Prices" to get averages for all states, including Utah. Lastly, AAA also has a "Gas Price Finder," which helps you hunt for low-priced fuel. Enter your Zip Code in the box under the "Gas Price Finder" headline.
Denny's breakfast deal
Denny's, which handed out free breakfasts not too long ago in a wildly successful national promotion, has a new deal for you. On April 8, buy a Grand Slam breakfast entree and whoever is with you gets a free Grand "Slamwich," a new breakfast sandwich. As always, check beforehand to see if a location is "participating" before you go, and what hours of the morning the offer is valid.

Fare sale mania

Free financial advice Friday
Friday's the day the Money Bus comes to Salt Lake City. During the stop, volunteer financial advisers will be available to provide free financial advice to those with personal finance questions.  Those giving advice are fee-only financial planners —the kind who don't accept commissions for peddling insurance and other financial products. The bus, which is touring the country, is sponsored by the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors Consumer Education Foundation, TD Ameritrade and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. Financial advisers will be available for one-on-one sessions noon to 5 p.m. at the Salt Lake City public library's main branch conference center, 210 East 400 South. Go here for more information about the stop in Salt Lake City or scores of other areas as well.
