Restaurant.com sale

November 20th, 2009

give_70r1_06

Right now, you can buy $25 restaurant dining certificates from Restaurant.com for only $3.  Use code GIVE at checkout. Note: I post these offers because a lot of people love Restaurant.com. Others, however, have had some problems using the certificates. When ordering, read the fine print. Individual restaurants have different policies regarding their use. Thanks ThatWentWell.net!

Adventures in price matching

November 20th, 2009

I went to both Target and Wal-Mart yesterday and asked a lot of questions about their holiday price matching policies.

Both major retailers have price-matching programs. (Go here  to read Target's price matching policy. Wal-Mart's policy is here.)

But what about doorbusters, and other limited time offers?

A Wal-Mart manager told me that the global retailer will match competitor's holiday deals, including the heavily discounted  "doorbuster" specials that may be in effect only a few hours. You need to bring the advertisement, though, and it has to be an actual set price, as Wal-Mart does not price match percentage-off offers or buy-one-get-one offers.

I couldn't really get a straight answer from Target, but got the idea that trying to price match a limited-time doorbuster special there may not be successful. You may want to inquire with your local store, as I've found that policies seem to vary slightly at individual Target stores.  Good luck!

Toy deals

November 20th, 2009

This is definitely a good time to get some highly discounted toys by combining sales with manufacturer's coupons.

For example,  Toys R Us has Mr. Potato Head on sale today and Saturday for $3.99. (Check out the ad here).  Use this $2/1 coupon to get one for only $1.99!  (Thanks ThatWentWell.net!) If you are looking for Star Wars toys, read this. Thanks CommonSensewithMoney!

As I blogged about earlier, Hasbro has a section of printable coupons for toys on the Coupons.com web site. Click on "Hasbro Savings Center." You can also go here for Hasbro game coupons, such as the new variety of Connect 4 called Connect 4x4.

But there are other sources of these types of coupons as well, including:

$5 off Fisher Price's Trio building system. Go here for that coupon. I used this coupon this week to buy the kit pictured above. I bought it from Wal-Mart, which was selling it for $29.99. I used a Kmart ad - it's on sale through Sunday there - to get it for $17.99. After the $5 off coupon, I paid only $12.99.

You can also "stack" coupons for added savings. For$10 Target coupon and the $5 manufacturer's coupon mentioned above, and get it for $44.99. (Check out all the Target toy coupons here.)

Playskool has $75 worth of toy coupons here, good on a variety of toys, including classics such as Mr. Potato Head and Sit N Spin.

Coupons for Hasbro games can be found here.

Philanthropy on the cheap

November 20th, 2009

I've blogged before about how I buy toys on sale and clearance all year round so that our family can participate in numerous holiday toy drives around the holidays.

Another way we like to help others is by contributing to food banks. Each year, we buy Thanksgiving dinner for at least a couple of families in need. This year, all the great food sales that are going on have made this family tradition more affordable.

For example, through Saturday Target has a variety of staples on sale, such as 10 pound bags of potatoes for 99 cents, canned Del Monte vegetables for 45 cents, Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup and Swanson chicken broth for 49 cents and Stove Top stuffing mix for 79 cents.  With or without coupons, these are good prices!

And Wal-Mart has turkeys for as low as 40 cents per pound. Those turkeys are part of Walmart's $20 Thanksgiving menu promotion, which for a total of about $20 includes one 12-pound Grade A turkey, three 11 to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables, two 14-ounce cans of Ocean Spray cranberry sauce, three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing, one 5-pound bag of red potatoes, one 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls and one 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake.

These are just two examples. Other grocery stores have great prices this week as well, making it a great time to stock up.

It's that time again

November 19th, 2009

It's that time of the week again, when that crazy web site  OldNavyWeekly.com will update with new coupons.  (It could happen anytime today or tonight!) You can try to find a coupon on your own or go to ThriftyNorthwestMom.com's web site for a list of all the secret locations. The best coupons go within minutes, but there's always some decent ones left that can be paired with sale and clearance items for a great deal.
