World Food Day
With rising food prices forcing more people to go hungry, World Food Day 2008 is more important than ever.

Utahns, from all income levels, can participate in the Oct. 16 event, designed to raise awareness about food insecurity.

On that day, visit one of the 18 Salt Lake area restaurants that will be offering World Food Day "specials." The meals can be ordered in small, medium, and large portions. After the meal, customers (not the restaurant) will set the final price.

A portion of the money collected from the "specials" will go to local food charities. For a list of participating restaurants go to the Salt Lake City Everybody Eats website.

This unique dining idea is the brainchild of Denise Cerreta, owner of the One World Everybody Eats Community Kitchen, at 41 S. 300 East. The restaurant follows the "take what you can eat and pay what you can" motto every day.

It's just one of many events planned for Salt Lake City's "World Food Week." The schedule includes a declaration signing by Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, a tour of non-profits that deal with food insecurity and a panel discussion at Westminster College.
