saw former Houston Rocket Matt Bullard standing in the hallway
outside the locker rooms at EnergySolutions Arena.
I had to smile, just as I do every time I see Bullard or hear his
name.
Now a member of the Rockets' broadcast team, Bullard is a former
player who had a decent-if-unspectacular NBA career.
During the 1999-2000 season, Bullard subjected himself to the wrath
of Karl Malone.
During a Jazz-Mavericks game in Dallas, then-coach Don Nelson
wandered out onto the court and confronted Malone for roughing up his
center, Shawn Bradley.
The next day, the Rockets' Bullard said he was glad Nelson had stood up to
Malone because the NBA never did.
Told of Bullard's remarks, I can still see Malone's face and hear
his reaction. The Mailman certainly delivered, at least if you are a
reporter looking for a few quotes for your story.
Wondering why it is always "guys who can't play who do all the
talking," Malone called Bullard "a wimp," a "punk" and "a
beautician."
Come to think of it, Malone's reaction reminded me of Larry Miller,
when I asked him two weeks ago about the play of his team. The look
on Miller's face after a 126-98 loss to Phoenix -- and his
declaration that the Jazz "suck" -- mirrored Malone's disgust with
Bullard.
