Were Oden's tonsils the problem or was he?
The most interesting thing I heard at the Rocky Mountain Revue on Thursday involved a player who is not even participating in the games at Salt Lake Community College.
An NBA scout told me this story about Portland's Greg Oden, the No. 1 pick in the draft:
In the Trail Blazers' first two games of the Las Vegas Summer League, Oden struggled. In Game 1, he finished with six points, two rebounds and 10 fouls -- the most allowed in the summer league. In Game 2, Oden played slightly better. He had 13 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. But he also committed nine fouls.
At that point, Portland management announced that Oden needed surgery to remove his tonsils, ending his first summer league. I heard, however, that the Trail Blazers knew about Oden's trouble with his tonsils all along. The original plan was to have them removed sometime prior to the start of training camp.
Instead, the Blazers suddenly scheduled the summer league-ending surgery because Oden was playing so poorly and they did not want him to lose confidence.
Personally, I still think Oden will be a superstar in the NBA. And I don't know if this version of tonsil-gate is true. But it's food
for thought.

This is irreprehensible reporting. I understand that blogging is a form of expressed opinion, but there has to be some journalistic integrity. Name the scout and lets see him back this up. Scout is probably from the Celtics who still are crying about tanking the season and not getting the #1 pick. Stick to real news, Steve.

Actually what happened, is that after Oden played very well in 2 organized games against the Clippers and Nuggets, the team decided they had seen enough from Oden and elected to have the surgery done immediately. Of course they knew about his tonsils...and his sinus infection too...but after seeing how it impacted his stamina out on the court, I think they decided to take care of it now and get it over with since these were just summer league games. Here is a good article that documents how the situation went down http://www.oregonlive.com/oregonian/stories/index.ssf?/base/sports/1184048758124800.xml&coll=7

Here is another article about Oden's summer league play and tonsils...it's from the Blazers website so take for what it's worth http://mikebarrettsblog.blogspot.com/2007/07/oden-dominates-scrimmages.html

And people in SLC wonder why so many NBA fans think they're a bunch of whiny pinheads? Get a life, or another wife, & leave the reporting to someone with a moral compass.
