A reminder: In Sunday's Tribune I picked Kevin Garnett as the MVP, Nate McMillan as the Coach of the Year, Kevin Durant as the Rookie of the Year, Chris Kaman as Most Improved, Jason Maxiell as the Sixth Man Award winner and Marcus Camby as the Defensive Player of the Year.
A few of you mentioned Garnett, but it's clear most of you believe the MVP should be Kobe Bryant or LeBron James (my runner-ups, at least). Denver's Allen Iverson was also mentioned, which surprised me.
The Lakers' Phil Jackson received a lot of support for Coach of the Year, along with Byron Scott of New Orleans.
Your nominations for Most Improved Player included Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge, the Jazz's Ronnie Brewer and "somebody from Orlando," since the Magic are one of the NBA's most improved teams.
I can live with that kind of logic.
As far as the Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, nobody argued with my choices of Durant and Camby.
One reader who signed his email "Jimmy" obviously put an extreme amount of thought and effort into his suggestions, so I thought I would pass it along to you.
Here are his midseason winners:
Midseason MVP
Who I want to win: Brandon Roy. This kid is for real.He gets to the rim as easy as almost anyone in the league. He has led a team to the top of the division that was supposed to just lie down because of Oden being out.
Who will win: LeBron or Kobe (whoever sells the most jerseys)
Coach of the Year
Who I want to win: Nate McMillan. I love the Sloan-type of coaching where the last person a professional athlete has to respect is their coach. It's almost a lost art.
Who will win: Doc Rivers. Celtics are the greatest: 70 win season. Blah, blah, blah. Try winning 70 without Garnett. Even with Pierce and Allen, Celtics don't even make the playoffs.
Rookie of the Year
Who I want to win: Jamario Moon. Whoever says that they knew who this kid was at the beginning of the season is a liar. This is the "Rudy" of our day. Twenty-seven years old and doing what he is doing? Where has he been?
Who will win: Kevin Durant. You might as well just give it to him now. I like Horford, too, but the award almost always goes to the one that scores the most points.
Most Improved Player
Who I want to win: Ronnie Brewer. I would love to see this happen. I think that he has earned it. Top ten in steals. Defense is getting better.
Who will win: Caron Butler. With no Arenas this year, Butler has to carry the team and has played well.
6th Man of the Year
Who I want to win: Leandro Barbosa. The Brazilian Blur. Fastest man in the NBA.
Who will win: Manu Flopobili. I am getting angry just thinking about this guy. He is ... I have to stop.
Defensive Man of the Year
Who I want to win: Josh Smith. The dude is blocking everybody! Longer than he looks. He's kind of a punk, but a punk with game.
Who will win: Marcus Camby. If he is in the middle playing for Utah, 2007-08 NBA champs.
Nicely done, Jimmy.
