Game day -- San Antonio
If you hear an F16 flying low over Salt Lake City this afternoon, it's probably Gregg Popovich arriving in town for tonight's game against the Jazz. Popovich was honored Friday by the Air Force Academy with a distinguished graduate award at an afternoon luncheon.

Needless to say, the Spurs didn't hold a pregame shootaround Friday, although a couple of players (including Robert Horry) made it over to EnergySolutions Arena for some work.

From the game notes: The Spurs ranked third in the NBA in allowing just 90.9 points a game on defense . . . .The Spurs can clinch a playoff berth for the 11th straight year with a victory tonight. . . . During the Tim Duncan era, San Antonio has a .735 winning percentage after the All-Star break. The Spurs are 18-6 so far this season and own an eight-game winning streak. . . . .Manu Ginobili is averaging 20.1 points off the bench as the leading contender to win sixth man of the year . . . .Michael Finley is averaging 18.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in the last five games. . . .Bobby Jones has played for a record five teams this season.

From the papers: After an admonition from Gregg Popovich at midseason, the Spurs have gone from 15th to 5th in the NBA in opposing field goal percentage defense. the Spurs are allowing teams to shoot just 44.5 percent this season. Still, Bruce Bowen says San Antonio is still waiting for what he calls that ‘Wow' defensive game. . . .I'd still choose Champion Air over flying commercially to cover the NBA any day of the week, no matter what this story about nearly 600 mechanical problems says.

From the Web: If you'd like a primer on Donnie Walsh's track record as Indiana general manager, Howard Beck has one today in the New York Times. . . . Shaquille O'Neal continues to lash out at Pat Riley (I smell a Heat-Suns Christmas game next season) . . . .Just seems fitting that Frank Isola at the New York Daily News would get his hands on the Knicks' confidential 16-page plan on handling the media. So far, it seems to be working out great.

Next up: The Jazz won't play again until Tuesday, when they'll face New Orleans on the road. (Hoping we don't have to drive from Houston for that one.) The Hornets will play host to the Knicks on Friday, with the question of how Byron Scott and Isiah Thomas could end up in such different circumstances.

Key games: Golden State at Memphis, New York at New Orleans, Minnesota at Phoenix, Dallas at L.A. Lakers, Houston at Seattle
