Jazz in six
I can't take credit for the line, but as one courtside observer said in the first half of Wednesday's blowout in San Antonio, "The NBA: Where common sense prevails."

The Jazz were better served losing to the Spurs than winning, a fact of which the players seemed well aware even if we tiptoed around the subject in recent days. I brought it up with Kevin O'Connor this morning and he called me a "cynical" something or other.

They won't have home-court advantage, but the Jazz will open the playoffs as the clear favorite in their first-round rematch against Houston.

As I said walking out of the Jazz's pregame shootaround Wednesday: "The difference is that the Jazz CAN beat the Spurs but they WILL beat the Rockets."

You can argue that possibly having to play the Lakers in the conference semifinals will ultimately doom the Jazz. I'm not going to disagree with that. It also would have been a monumental breakthrough to knock off the defending champions.

But there's no guarantee the Jazz would get out of the first round against the Spurs. I believe you take the surer bet to advance, then wait and see if something breaks in your favor in the later rounds.

Maybe Kobe Bryant will get chopped on his hand and damage that injured pinkie even more. Maybe Pau Gasol will sprain his ankle again and miss two weeks like he did in March. You never know, especially in this year's playoffs.

Although Tracy McGrady scorched the Jazz for 47 points in their home opener back on Nov. 1, the Rockets have some serious matchup issues to address going into this series. How are Bobby Jackson and Aaron Brooks going to stop Deron Williams, for one?

Carlos Boozer and Mehmet Okur figure to dominate against the likes of Luis Scola and Dikembe Mutombo. The Rockets also let Kyle Korver bury three-pointers from the corner one after another in their Jan. 27 loss to the Jazz in Houston.

I'm not sure if it was shown on KJZZ, but Boozer brushed his shoulders off for the cameras when the subject of lost momentum was brought up after Wednesday's loss. That act probably said more about the Spurs game than anything else.

The Jazz squandered some of what they gained by beating the Spurs, Hornets, Nuggets and Rockets in recent games, but their confidence is still sky high entering the playoffs.

The Rockets will give the Jazz a good fight, but I'm not expecting to make another trip to Houston for a Game 7. You can start getting ready to boo Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher when they come to EnergySolutions. I'm taking Jazz in six . . . and it wouldn't surprise me in five.

I totally agree with the last part about Jazz in six or five. Also, no one loves to boo the Lakers more than me, but I'm begging the media lets print mostly helpful stories like how Houston had that amazing streak and should command respect or how Derek Fisher was a great guy when he was here. Please don't stir up lame motivation for the Rick and Phil. Help us Jazz fans out a little :)

Jambo1984, You have "bitterness that goes back to Malone and Stockton days" which causes you to hate the Jazz? That's pretty sad man! I guess you cry over spilt milk too?

Nothing more would make you feel better then for the Jazz to lose? You really need to get some more action in your life old boy. How about getting a promotion at work or meeting the love of your life? Wouldn't those things make you happier then the Jazz losing?

You think we cheat? How do you mean? Like the NBA ref donahue cheated? Or, do you mean the Jazz play hard nose basketball and your team couldn't hold up against it?

My advice, get over it! It's for sure going to happen again!

Houston is a good sports town, just not a good sports post-season town..., but going to a regular season Astros or Texans game must be AWESOME.
I don't think Jazz fans have to be careful in wishing to draw a team with the incredible point guard tandem of Bobby Jackson and Chris Rock (or whoever that guy is). Thanks for the five-game series though....

Sure... write off the same Rockets that won 55 games (37 without Yao, and 16 without TMac)... not to mention the team that won 22 in a row this year. You guys will be the chumps this year knowing that you lost to the Rockets without Yao Ming.

2 Championships and counting...

Go Jazz Go!

I agree with Jasonk, I really don't believe Jerry Sloan would tank a game. You could see the frustration the players had, if they meant to tank it I am sure they wouldn't have been so pissed about being blown out. I am sure the game may not have been all that important win or lose but Jerry wont accept anything less then his players best.

Should be an interesting series. BTW, I am a Houston Rockets Fan. GL to both teams and I cant wait to see who comes out of the Wild Wild West.

Just remember the quote from Rudy-T back from the 2nd CHAMPIONSHIPS, "Don't Ever Underestimate the Heart of a Champion". Rockets in 7 ... Better luck next year Jazz fans....

big words for a team that has not even won a single championship. you had your chances with stockton and malone, who i both adored. if mr. jordan did not exist back then, utah would have won two championships. but with the team right now, i just dont see a championship when there are so many more better teams than team. during stockton-malone, they were the 2nd best team and still they couldn't beat the best team. utah is at best the 4th or 5th best team in the nba right now.

Hmm.. nice little note. that is, until the part about getting ready to boo Derek Fisher. i normally dont write comments on these things but i could not stay quiet on this one anymore. i watched the Utah vs Lakers games during the regular season and i almost threw up when i heard the Utah fans booing Fish. You Utah fans who booed him are a disgrace to all sports fans, and humans in general. how dare you disrespect a man who didnt leave your team for more money or because you guys CHOKED in the playoffs. No, he left because of his daughter's illness. He had an opportunity to be closer with his sick child while she got better care, and he took it. This is the man who, while his daughter was diagnosed with the illness came back to your whack team to try and help you get a title last season. and yet you boo him? you boo him??? all of you who did boo him should hold your heads down in shame. you make me sick. the situation Fish is in trancends a stupid basketball game or sport in general. the fans who booed him are bad enough, but the writers who egg them on are even worse. aka Ross SILER for one. if Utah does manage to meet up with the Lakers in the next round then give the man some respect. sure go ahead an boo kobe or whoever else you want but you gotta admit, Derek Fisher deserves a pass from booing from the so called "Great Utah fans".

Is everyone forgetting the Jazz had the best record against the other 7 top teams in the West, yes better than LA, yes better than NO, and yes better than the Rockets. And they are much improved on the road since the Korver trade going 11-10 with on the road.

I would say Jazz in 6 simply because its probably a little too much to ask for them to take two on the road but one is a pretty sure thing. Then again without Yao the rockets are going to have a lot of problems in their interior defense.

I am sure no coach or team in the West wanted to draw Utah in the first. In fact outside of the Nuggets I am sure none of the other six teams wanted to face any of the other six. I mean who wants to have to go agsint the Suns or Dallas and then have to turn around and face the Spurs or Hornets.

These playoffs are going to be awesome.

What's all this talk about 5 or 6 games? Houston is without their starting point guard for the 1st 2 in Houston and Jazz are unbeatable at home. All defensive effort can focus on McGrady as no one else is more than a scrappy rebounder on the Rockets. Jazz sweep.

At 9:11 PM, Blogger Greg said...

I cannot believe people are talking bad about Fisher still. LA had the doctors that he needed. Salt Lake didn't. He took a pay cut to play in LA and yet you guys rip him. It's just classless. Don't question his motives, that just ain't your place. I can't wait for D Fish to hit that game winner in Salt Lake. That'll be beautiful!

Jazz will still win this Houston series. The rockets just aren't that good. Their streak was what it was, but that's old news. Jazz in 6. Second Round, Lakers in 5. (The Jazz will lose the first two in LA, split the two games in SLC and lose game five in LA... You heard it here first.)

the only thing worse than the jazz are jazz fans!! you guys are idiots, know nothing about basketball. To say that the Jazz tanked to play the Rockets doesn't make any sense at all. The Jazz would have played Phoenix if they would have beat SA. SA has the tie breaker on Houston so the seeding would have been LA NO UT SA HOU PHO dal (<-- they dont even get caps i hate them so much) and DEN. So your genius columnist in that craphole town of yours has led you astray. They got spanked by SA because SA outplayed them. Oh and 2 points to make 1. Houston won 55 games even though they lost their superstar half way through the season so calling them a bad team is ludicris. 2. I believe someone posted that people that hate UT have never been there.. well I lived there with my wife for a year and kissed the ground in Houston when I moved back there!!! Utah is nothing but trailer parks, Mormons (that kooky religion), and poor people.. I'm glad we're forcing you people out of our great state right now. go poligimy!!! GO ROX!!!!

I think any team in the west is tought to play. As a Jazz fan, I would think we have the best change against Denver, Houston, and NO. Dallas and Phoenix next. SA third. And last, the Lakers scare me because we always play poor against them. Rockets won't win the Jazz. T-MAC has to score 40 something points to beat the Jazz and that's not going to happen 4 times in the next 7 games.

Houston you mess with, and you mess with my whole family! You mess with my daddy, you mess with my mommies, you mess with my 17 bro's, you mess with my 15 sista's...........go Jazz!

At 11:44 PM, Blogger Jonathon said...

Yea, fisher did take less money, but his daughter goes to new york for treatment. He doesn't like Salt Lake like a lot of people, and just wanted to go back to LA for the glitz and glamor. Of course everyone feels sorry for his daughter, but he used her to his advantage to get on the team he wanted. I think we're passed that though. He didn't receive any boos the second time here. Boozer's daughter also has medical problems, and she just now is able to move here because of the high elevation, three years later. He didn't whine and use her as an excuse to get on another team.

Jazz did themselves good by losing to the Spurs. Playing them in the first round would equal doom, especially since they got their guys back, ginobili and barry. Jazz own the rockets, nuggets, and hornets. I think it's funny how confident Houston fans are. Remember, ya'll lost at home in game 7 with Yao. 22 win streak is impressive, but a seven game series against a team you don't play well against? Good luck.

Let's just talk Lakers because talking about this Houston series is a waste of time. Jazz in 5.

Nobody would have bagged Fisher if he had asked to be released so that he could sign with a Cali team. The fact is, the whole release was under the premise that Fish needed to go back East, which he obviously never planned to do. You don't think LHM would've let Fish miss as many games as he wanted to be with his daughter if Fish wanted to stay in Utah? You bet he would. If I am still hearing every road telecast talk about how Boozer signed his contract, then you better believe I'm going to keep talking about Fish. I hope his daughter pulls through, but it's open season on Fish as a basketball player. He gets paid to play and I will boo him as much as I want. If Kobe doesn't like it, he can take it out on some hotel staff member somewhere...

At 1:26 AM, Blogger Shem said...

The way I see it is that Derick Fisher is a great guy, and I am very sad that his daughter had to become an issue at all. But also as a player in the spot light like he is, it will come up. I still think that the jazz organization deserves some respect for leting him out of his contract with no obligations. If he wants to play for the lakers let him be. Remember some are in for the championship and will go to the team with the best chance.(I am not admiting the lakers have the best chance, pearsonally if jazz don't win, i want to see Garnett get his ring) I am a die hard Jazz fan and have been since I was 8. As far as the jazz cheating it's just an excuse people use who can't accept the fact that they lost to a team who has not won a championship. But if you can provide proof I will listen and look into it. I do accept that fact that cheating does happen but it also happens on every team and sport. As far as Jazz losing on purpose, I don't by it. I can see it as a stratigic move, but salon would never let it happen. I find it also sad that some of you bring religion and say that all jazz fans are bad. Maybe I miss understood what your meaning was, but you can't ever say that all are bad. I respect all NBA players (even jordan when he beat us two times in a row for the title). The time and dedication that they put to thier career and communitty they don't deserve the way fans talk. All fans should learn from the players and understand you win some you lose some. Everyone tries to be the best and that deserves the ultimate respect no matter who your faviorit team is. Jazz in 5 and I would love to see a title also. Goodluck to all teams and fans. And yes I do belive that fans are part of the team.

All of you Jazz haters must not know much about basketball...

First of all, no, the Jazz did not lose to Houston without Yao Ming. Check again.

Secondly, the Jazz is one of only two teams to beat every team in the league this year; the other is Boston.

And for everyone who believes Utah can't win road games are fooling themselves. While they may overlook easier opponents at times, they come to play in "big games." They have beat the Celtics, Pistons, Hornets, Rockets, Suns, Nuggets, Warriors, and the Magic on the road. They handed Boston their biggest loss of the season (18 points) AT BOSTON.

Don't hate. Congratulate.

At 1:55 AM, Blogger Andy said...

I think it was a very sympathetic move by Kevin O'Connor (Jazz GM) to let Derek Fisher leave. However, I still think it was a bad move. I know about his child and that Fisher wanted some of the best doctors in the world. But honestly, he has enough money to have one of those doctors to treat his child in Utah.

The NBA is a business. A multi-billion dollar business. You don't just let a player of that caliber walk away while he's still under contract. Fortunately for the Jazz, they were able to bring in another impact player in Kyle Korver (Jazz are 38-12 with Korver, 16-16 without), and I don't think that Korver deal would have gone through if the Jazz still had Fisher. So, it looks like things are working out... for both, the Jazz and the Lakers.

You all seriously do not know Fisher at all. The guy is one of the classiest players in the league. You can't blame him for wanting to return to Southern California over NYC. He's played a lot of ball there and is familiar with the area and probably the doctors as well. You have D Will, why do you even complain? And how in the world could you boo someone like Fish who has been such a class act. You fans are bitter.

Even Malone left for the Lakers... If anyone should have been booed, it should have been Malone. Your franchise player left you. That hurts way more than the backup PG. But that's how you roll: you get bitter over the weakest stuff. I'm so glad I get to move out of Utah within the year. You simply don't understand sports and are classless fans.

They will play well because they have a greater mission to pass the next round or even better.

When Derek Fisher played in Utah, he was not the backup point-guard. He was the starting shooting-guard. He also happened to Utah's clutchest player at the time. So, of course, he meant a lot. Sounds like you're the one who doesn't know him too well.

I'm not even from Utah. I just felt like clearing up the facts to all these ignorant haters. The Jazz are a very solid basketball club and will give any opponent trouble, frustration... and, oh yeah, bruises.

I predict, Western Conference, First Round series results will be as follows; L.A over Denver, Houston over Utah, New Orleans over Dallas, San Antonio over Phoenix. Western Conference semifinals results; Houston over L.A., New Oleans over San Antonio. Western Conference finals, Houston over New Orleans. Eastern Conference first round, Boston over Cleveland, Detroit over Atlanta, Cleveland over Washington, Detroit over Philadelphia, Orlando over Toronto, Eastern Conference semifinals, Boston over Cleveland, Detroit over Orlando, Eastern Conference Finals, Detroit over Boston, NBA Finals results Houston over Detroit. Respectfully, Primo Benavides, Pealand TX

OK, we have no intelligence when you are saying yall, and misspelling a four letter word, it's jazz. and if we have no chance against any of the top 6 west teams how come we are beating the fifth seeded rockets? Or how did we have the best record against the top teams in the NBA over the season? please think, before you write ignorant comments.
