Nothing amazing happened here
Somewhere early in the third quarter, the Spurs and Lakers lost me.
I admit it.
As L.A. pulled away from San Antonio in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals on Friday night, I grabbed the remote to my TV, checked out the other stations and -- thankfully -- found a couple of baseball games that were far more entertaining: TCU-New Mexico and, in the National League, Colorado-New York.
(FYI: The Horned Frogs rallied past the Lobos in the Mountain West tournament and the Rockies beat the Mets in 13 innings at Coors Field).
The Spurs? The Lakers?
It was as painful as watching the new American Idol, and I'm not talking about Kobe Bryant.
Most of the first and second quarters were played with the intensity and execution normally associated with games in late November, not late May. As jump shot after jump shot bounced off the rim and as pass after pass found an unintended target, my interest level waned.
After the Lakers closed the half on a 9-0 run to take a 46-37 lead, I stuck with the NBA-Where-Amazing-Happens just to see how the Spurs would respond to a little adversity.
Of course, they didn't.
The Lakers immediately upped their lead to 16 and the Spurs meekly surrendered. If Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett had fought with this kind of determination in 1836, nobody would remember the Alamo, and the site where it now sits near downtown San Antonio would be a parking lot.
The San Antonio-L.A. series isn't over, of course.
The Spurs lost the first two games of their second-round series at New Orleans before bouncing back and beating the Hornets. The Jazz also made their second-round series against the Lakers interesting after falling behind 2-0. So there is hope that the Western Conference finals becoming more watchable than the Mountain West baseball tournament.
Somebody just needs to tell the Spurs.
