Whether it's a product of staying put with the same roster from last season, the Jazz will enter this season with only the 10th-best odds of winning the NBA championship. Even Portland at 12-to-1 has better odds right now than the 18-to-1 Jazz. Shows you what winning three playoff series the last two years is worth.
The Jazz opened at 12-to-1 in June and dropped this summer. Portland opened at 40-to-1 and has climbed since. Houston opened at 15-to-1 and is now 6-to-1 after acquiring Ron Artest from Sacramento in July. The Celtics are 5-to-2 favorites to repeat followed by the Lakers at 3-to-1.
I'm sure the Jazz having more of a regional following than a national one plays a role in their longer-than-expected odds. I have to say I was surprised to see the Jazz come in at 18-to-1 when you consider that they very easily could go 39-2 at home and run away with the West with a decent road record.
Here's the odds straight from Vegas. It's definitely interesting to see where people are putting their money as the season opens. And I'll check back in from Boise, Idaho, (or maybe Jackpot, Nev.) on Monday night with some extras from the Jazz's annual media day.
