Sunday odds and ends
Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor provided the latest update on Deron Williams tonight. Williams is going for an MRI exam Monday and the Jazz will wait to announce the severity of his left ankle sprain until the results come back.

O'Connor said he hadn't talked to Williams today and couldn't speak to how he was doing. He also didn't want to get into whether he was more or less encouraged about a quick return a day after the injury.

    Some other odds and ends:

I watched the replay of the play that injured Williams probably 10 times on ESPN.com at the airport. It doesn't appear to me as if Derrick Rose did anything Bruce Bowen-esque by deliberately sticking his foot under Williams as he landed. Of course, we haven't heard whether Williams thought Rose did anything wrong. As a sidenote, one of the NBA's points of emphasis this season involves preventing defenders from sticking their feet under shooters in the air.

We've written a little bit about the serious side of rookie Kosta Koufos, who still answers questions "Yes, sir" and "No, sir." Koufos has been so serious, in fact, we never saw one of his jokes coming Saturday. There was a TV outside the Jazz locker room at United Center showing the Michigan/Penn State game. Koufos was coming off the court when he glanced at the score and said, "Go Blue!" We looked at Koufos, an Ohio State product, as if he was crazy. "It's a joke," Koufos said before ducking in the door. Well played, sir.

Before all the Williams stuff happened Saturday, Jazz coach Jerry Sloan talked a little bit pregame about defense. "You've got to create good habits for yourself defensively," Sloan said. "You can get by on the offensive end sometimes, but on the defensive end you've got to have good habits. You can't just turn it off and turn it on because you're going to get beat." Sloan wasn't happy watching his starters give up 16 points in the first 6:04, particularly the baseline drive, dunk and three-point play that Mehmet Okur gave up to Tyrus Thomas.

We'll have updates on our site from practice Monday with the latest updates on Williams.
