Here is Wednesday's update:
1. Speaking to the overall weakness of the draft, the Washington Wizards apparently don't want the No. 5 pick and are using it as trade bait. Phoenix is one potential suitor and Amare Stoudemire, the power forward who is coming of eye surgery, could the star-type player the Wizards want to consider making a deal. After being mauled by Denver in the playoffs, the Mavericks also wants to move up to get a power-type player, perhaps Jordan Hill of Arizona. It's possible Josh Howard has finally worn out his welcome in Dallas and could be a key to any deal.
2. Davidson combo guard Stephen Curry's stock is rising. Supposedly, he declared for the draft after the Knicks told him he would not get past them at No. 8. But Curry plans to work out for Sacramento, which picks fourth and wants a point guard. The Kings are hoping Spain's Ricky Rubio slips to them but, if that does not happen, they will look at Syracuse's Jonny Flynn and Memphis' Tyreke Evans, along with Curry.
3. Is North Carolina's Ty Lawson this draft's version of Russell Westbrook? Last year, Westbrook was considered a mid-first round pick until teams started seeing him in predraft workouts. He jumped all the way to No. 4 and, today, he looks like Oklahoma's City point guard for the next 10 years. Some say Lawson's workouts have similarly impacted his draft status and now, instead of being a late first-rounder, he could be a lottery pick.
When I hear more, I will pass it along.
