Brewer deadline now Monday
ESPN.com’s Marc Stein reported Thursday that the Jazz and other teams will have until Monday to negotiate potential contract extensions with Ronnie Brewer and other members of the 2006 draft class.
The deadline is typically Oct. 31 - - Saturday - - but with the date falling on a weekend, the deadline will be pushed back until the next business day.
We’ll see if the Jazz can get a deal done with Brewer, who is the last remaining member of their young core of players - - Deron Williams, Paul Millsap and C.J. Miles are the others - - not signed long term.
If you remember, Miles signed a four-year, $14.8 million offer sheet with Oklahoma City that the Jazz matched. You’d have to assume Brewer wants a contract in excess of that, given both where he was drafted and his growth the last two seasons.
Brewer, a full-time starter and double-figurer scorer on two playoff teams, would become a restricted free agent if he and the Jazz can’t agree to terms, which might not be the worst thing from the Jazz’s perspective.
The Jazz were stung last season by Portland’s offer to Millsap as a restricted free agent, but there’s no guarantee the same would happen with Brewer. It was a tough go for David Lee, Raymond Felton and a host of other restricted free agents this summer.
Additionally, the Jazz have to weigh what kind of commitment to make in Brewer, knowing that teams were able to sign the likes of Ron Artest and Trevor Ariza this summer to midlevel exception contracts of five years and $34 million.

The Jazz canceled practice Thursday after landing back in Salt Lake City after 3 a.m. from Denver. The combination of the 8:30 p.m. start against the Nuggets and the snowstorm that slammed the Front Range made a late night even later.
It was possibly the worst weather you could have for an October trip. I left Pepsi Center around 12:30 a.m. and it took more than an hour to reach the Denver airport out Interstate 70, which was pretty much snow covered.
My 6:10 a.m. flight got canceled and my 7:20 a.m. flight spent an hour-plus on the ground getting de-iced and waiting for a runway to open. It had snowed for at least 18 consecutive hours by the time we left.
You only can hope bad weather isn’t contagious like injuries, otherwise it’s going to be a long season.
