GOP: Its Own Two-Party System
Somehow the seemingly eternal Republican grip on the House, Senate and governor's office has never gotten in the way of good ol' (not to mention ugly) political infighting.
Take this week's hubbub over consultants warning that proposed jumbo tax cuts could ruin the state's credit rating.
When the governor, House speaker and Senate president jointly call for a moratorium on borrowing against sales tax revenues something serious is going down. Right?
Well, maybe.
House Republicans, who want to return to their constituents as much of the state's record-breaking surplus as possible, were fuming.
Many of them saw the timing of the moratorium warning as a "cheap political stunt" to undercut support for their $230 million tax break. That giveback could include more than $160 million through the elimination of the state's despised grocery sales tax.
At least one senator privately confirmed the moratorium announcement as sheer gamesmanship. "The Senate is a deliberative body. We do things methodically. One. Two," he said, mimicking a boxer's combination punches.
