Better Late Than Not at All
A week after her death, Utah lawmakers got around Monday to recognizing Coretta Scott King, widow of Martin Luther King Jr.

Legislators were virtually silent last week at the announcement of her death.

Apparently, the governor and first lady's planned attendance at King's funeral Tuesday forced the issue. Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. and First Lady Mary Kaye Huntsman were invited to the funeral in Lithonia, Georgia by the Rev. Bernice King, King's youngest daughter.

King founded the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Non-Violent Social Change in Atlanta and became a vocal civil rights advocate after her husband's assassination in 1968. She died in Mexico after undergoing treatment for a stroke and ovarian cancer.

Monday, House Speaker Greg Curtis held up two citations in King's honor. "We won't read those. But the governor would like to present them," he said.

We in Utah never deserved to be graced with her presence in our "great state". She did us a favor in dropping in only to be treated so poorly when she came to Utah. May she rest in peace!
