Find a New Scene, Gene
Sen. Howard Stephenson, whose bills this session have drawn the wrath of everybody from U.S. senators to grocery shoppers, learned in recent days he may have also alienated car wash professionals.

As part of the state's tax reform initiative, Stephenson is carrying a bill that would update the tax-exempt status of car washes and other coin-operated services.

Stephenson's bill would continue to exempt solely coin-operated car washes, but tax businesses where workers take your money (and conveniently can add a tax to it.)

Democrat Sen. Gene Davis half-seriously chided Stephenson that the tax bill would encourage businesses to use coin-operated equipment, rather than pay flesh-and-blood employees.

It took Stephenson a second to grasp what Davis was saying. Then the Draper Republican sighed. "Just go away," he told Davis. "Just go away."
