My, What a Big Intern You Have
It's time to play legislative-executive basketball again. But the House has brought in a ringer -- former Utah Jazz player Thurl Bailey.

The time-honored tradition of legislative branch v. executive branch hoops is Tuesday night at 6:30 in the Delta Center. The governor's office and legislators have negotiated the number of interns who can play and even agreed that one woman will be playing for each side throughout the game.

Worried they might be at a slight disadvantage -- in age and height (and, let's face it, weight) -- lawmakers have fixed the game to a certain extent by recruiting Bailey. But to qualify to play, Bailey technically has to be a legislator, staffer or intern.

To meet those specifications, Bailey sang Tuesday in the Utah House opening ceremonies and acted (briefly) as House Speaker Greg Curtis' intern.

Apparently, Curtis' regular intern is deathly ill.

"It's not like we just brought him up to play basketball," said House Republican spokeswoman Kate Bradshaw, with a straight face. "He has to sit up on the dais by the speaker."

Bailey's dais appearance lasted about one minute, then Curtis "released him" to go practice.
