SLC elects first openly gay council member
Stan Penfold, a gay man and the director of Utah Aids Foundation, has won the race to fill Salt Lake City’s District 3 council seat.
Penfold outpaced Phil Carroll to represent the Avenues and Capitol Hill, replacing outgoing Councilman Eric Jergensen.

The win gives Salt Lake City its first openly gay council member. In recent years, Utah’s progressive capital also has elected three openly gay state legislators.
There has been at least one other openly gay candidate elected to a city post in Utah. In 2002, the tiny town of Big Water, near Lake Powell, elected a gay man, Willie Marshall, as mayor.
