LGBT military personnel to be honored Wednesday
On Veterans Day, the Utah Pride Center will host a rally at noon in the State Capitol Rotunda to recognize LGBT veterans and active-duty service members.
State Rep. Christine Johnson, a Salt Lake City Democrat, plans to announce a resolution urging Congress to end “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.” President Barack Obama has pledged to repeal the 16-year-old rule that prevents LGBT military personnel from coming out.
“We need to send a message to active-duty LGBT Utahns that support exists,” said Jeff Key, a former Marine, in a statement. “We want … to honor those who have fought for this nation since its inception and who have been historically disrespected and ignored because they were gay.”
Last month, Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran who is being processed for discharge for coming out, visited the University of Utah and urged others to exit the closet.
