HOME FIRES BURNING
The New York Times has fired back up its Home Fires blog, and Utahn Lee Kelley is among a cast of five authors that the Times has asked to tell stories about the last — and longest — battle: Coming Home.
I met Kelley, then a lieutenant with the Utah National Guard, in Ramadi, Iraq, during the volatile fall of 2005. The New Orleans native was trying to stay focused on his duties at war while worried about his parents, who were among tens of thousands of Hurricane Katrina refugees.
As we were chatting, Kelley's commanding officer passed by. "Lee's a writer, too," he said. "Ask him about his blog."
I did. A few days later, a story about Kelley and his beautifully written blog was featured on the front page of The Tribune.
"That's how it all began," according to the introduction of Kelley's new book, Fire in the Night. "Since then, he's been in the top 10 military blogs... featured in TIME magazine, read some of his essays on radio shows..."
But perhaps more importantly than all of that, he's returned home to remake his life as a writer and a father.
We continue to wish him luck.
