Once a movie house...
"When did the Avalon become a rock venue?" I asked my colleague, pop-music writer Dan Nailen, today as I scrolled through my e-mail.
About a month ago, Dan told me, as the proprietors of what used to be the Lo-Fi Cafe have taken over the old moviehouse at 3605 S. State in South Salt Lake.
So another Salt Lake-area movie theater is transformed into something else. It got me nostalgic for other theaters that have been turned into another business:
- The old Trolley Theaters were, briefly, the theater/tavern The Wooden Dog. Now it's Pottery Barn.
- Trolley Corners was turned into a 24 Hour Fitness in 2004.
- The South Towne Center Cinemas was gutted in 2002, and is now REI.
- The Villa Theatre is now Adib's Rug Gallery.
- The Midvalley Cinemas in Taylorsville was demolished in 2002.
- The Murray Theatre became a church in 2001.
