Friday roundup
It's a mixed bag in this weekend's new releases.
The studio output is pretty disappointing: The technically proficient but emotionally distant kid's cartoon "Monster House"; M. Night Shyamalan's head-scratcher "Lady in the Water," which is ambitious but dull; and "My Super Ex-Girlfriend," which is jaw-droppingly awful. The best studio entry is "Clerks II," which is funny and smart, but also raunchy and dirty-minded - and should only be seen by adults with a high tolerance for offensiveness. (By the way, check out my interview with "Clerks II" stars Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson.)
The art-house fare is rather better. Check out the comedy "Strangers With Candy," with Amy Sedaris as the junkie-turned-student Jerri Blank (the disclaimer for offensiveness given to "Clerks II" applies here, too); or the heartwarming sports documentary "The Heart of the Game." My colleague Christy Karras was so-so about the erotic Brazilian drama "Lower City."

The Cricket is taking some vacation, stretching a three-day Pioneer Day weekend to six. I'll be back Thursday.
