Friday roundup
The best thing this weekend is "Notes on a Scandal," the chilling psychological thriller with great (and probably Oscar-nominated) performances by Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett.
Also good: "Curse of the Golden Flower," Zhang Yimou's grandious epic starring Chow Yun-Fat and Gong Li; and Bill Plympton's animated oddity "Hair High."
Not good: Nick Cassavetes' "Alpha Dog," a soul-crushing drama about a teen drug dealer (and last year's closing-night film at Sundance); and Luc Besson's pointless animated adventure "Arthur and the Invisibles," which could be retitled "Troll Dolls: The Movie."
Not screened for critics: The killer-crocodile movie "Primeval," and "Stomp the Yard," which looks like a college version of "You Got Served."
