Is he? Are they?
Today's topic: Sexual proclivities of fictional characters whose sexuality you never thought about.
Example No. 1 - This weekend's big bombshell that Prof. Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, is gay.
This was disclosed Friday by author J.K. Rowling, the creator of Dumbledore and the entire Hogwarts universe in the seven Harry Potter novels, at an engagement at New York's Carnegie Hall.
This news has delighted many, angered some (though anyone truly offended probably never let their kids read that occult-themed stuff anyway) and sent nearly everybody back to the books in search of subtext. (Here's a roundup of opinions, courtesy of New York magazine's culture blog.)
Example No. 2 - Peter Bradshaw, film critic for Britain's The Guardian, suggested on his blog today that he has found the only sex scene in a Disney animated movie.
The scene is during the song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" in "The Lion King," as the adult Simba and Nala cavort romantically. Bradshaw mostly highlights a shot of Nala after she and Simba have tumbled down a hill, after which she gives him a lick on the cheek.
Bradshaw writes: "But look: during this shot, in the bottom left corner of the frame, Nala is settling back in a very languorous and inviting manner. Then we cut to a close-up on Nala's face. And that expression ... I mean ... that's the minxy facial expression of a Disney character who clearly and explicitly wants something that I can't remember a Disney character wanting before or since: vigorous and protracted penetrative sex."
But after watching the clip (which Bradshaw handily attached to his post), the Cricket finds nothing quite so suggestive. Bradshaw seems to be looking a little too deeply in Nala's eyes. Perhaps it's time to buy some new DVDs for the kids.
