Ellen and Portia, and George and Brad
The thing about California having gay marriage (a path cleared by last week's California Supreme Court decision) is that, because California has so many more celebrities than Massachusetts (where gay marriage is also legal), the odds are slightly higher that the gay couples getting married are people whose names you know.
The day after the ruling, Ellen DeGeneres announced on her talk show that she and longtime girlfriend Portia Di Rossi ("Arrested Development") would get married. And soon after, actor George Takei ("Star Trek," "Heroes") announced that he and his partner of 21 years, Brad Altman, would be tying the knot ASAP.
It's a sign of how a long-standing prejudice can be worn away, bit by bit - and one of the first steps is seeing how that prejudice hurts people you know, even if you only know them through a TV screen.
