The Vulture flies the coop
A sad day at Cricket Central, as reporter/columnist Brandon Griggs is leaving The Salt Lake Tribune after 14 years of great writing and good fellowship. As he details in his final Culture Vulture column, Brandon has covered everything under the sun in Utah - from the Jazz to the Elizabeth Smart case. He's done so with wit, passion and an undying curiosity for what goes on in this pretty, great state. (He even wrote a book, Utah Curiosities, detailing some of his favorite oddball finds.)
Brandon was, more importantly, a great friend and colleague. He was one of the groomsmen when the Cricket married the beautiful Mrs. Cricket - and Mr. and Mrs. Cricket were there when Brandon married his bride Kristy (who writes the reality-TV column for In Utah This Week).
Brandon and Kristy are leaving for Atlanta - where Brandon will be writing for CNN.com - and we're all going to miss them terribly. Good luck, y'all.
The Culture Vulture column will survive. As Brandon announced in his farewell column, your friendly neighborhood Cricket will be taking it over in June, both in print every Tuesday and as a daily blog that will capture the flavor and backstage doings of Utah's arts and cultural communities. (And, yes, the title Culture Vulture will carry over to the blog, even though New York magazine calls its arts-and-entertainment blog Vulture - the Trib had it first!)
The change comes with a small sacrifice: The Cricket will discontinue his Sunday movie column after the June 8 edition. But he will still have ample opportunity to opine here on the Movie Cricket blog - while extending his range of kvetching to all things cultural in Utah with the new column/blog.
