"Maximus" at a minimum?
Even though hundreds of movies have been filmed in Utah over the years, it's still kind of cool to hear that another one is shooting here.

But not every movie shot in Utah is a "Jeremiah Johnson" or "The Searchers" or even a "High School Musical."

"National Lampoon's The Legend of Awesomest Maximus," a spoof of such recent epics as "300," "Troy" and "Gladiator," is now filming in Utah. (Never mind that "Meet the Spartans" trod this same sandal-tracked path earlier this year.)

Here's the synopsis, directly from the production company: "After a case of mistaken identity, Awesomest Maximus, the undeserving leader of the Trojan army, overcomes his weaknesses and saves Troy from King Erotic and his million-man Greek army."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the lead, Awesomest Maximus, is to be played by Will Sasso (pictured), the round-faced comic from "Mad TV." Kristanna Loken ("Terminator 3," "BloodRayne") plays Princess Hotessa; Ian Zeiring ("Beverly Hills 90210") plays Awesomest's arch-rival, Testiclees (yes, that's the level of humor we're dealing with); Tony Cox ("Bad Santa" and "Disaster Movie") and the great Rip Torn ("Men in Black," "Dodgeball") are also in the cast. The director is Jeff Kanew ("Revenge of the Nerds").

Someone who's really pumped about being in the cast is Nelson Frazier Jr., better known to World Wrestling Entertainment fans as Big Daddy V. "I’m very excited about doing something new," the wrestler told the website ClubWWI.com (as reported on this blog, WWEPreview.com).

Sight unseen, "The Legend of Awesomest Maximus" got dissed in most recent issue of Entertainment Weekly (in its "Bullseye" feature) - just for the description of Zeiring's character, an invincible warrior whose Achilles' heel is actually in his groin (isn't that everybody's Achilles' heel?).

The other problem is that the last National Lampoon movie filmed in Utah, "Bag Boy," was an out-and-out turkey. So one can only imagine what this one will be like.
