Last night
Pat's BBQ had one of the coolest scenes going in Salt Lake City, and it is well worth your while to check out the restaurant's music schedule. Stellar singer/songwriter
Alejandro Escovedo was headlining a show there from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., in a concert room just finished that morning. When I got there, Escovedo was just going on as a couple hundred people sat and grinded on some delicious ribs and pulled-pork -- two specialties of the house. BBQ and rock and roll are natural bedfellows in Escovedo's hometown of Austin, but there's not a scene quite like Pat's anywhere else in Salt Lake.
Escovedo packed a keyboard player, drummer, guitarist, bassist and cellist on the small stage and commenced rocking in impressive fashion with "Put You Down," following up with a couple of great songs from his latest album, "The Boxing Mirror:" "Dear Head on the Wall" and the haunting "Arizona." Good tunes, good food, good times.
For tonight, the best gig for my money is the New Amsterdams/Mae show at the
Avalon, starting at 7:30 p.m. Yeah, it's on the emo tip, but both bands have serious songwriting skills when it comes to poppy guitar-rock. Check it.
