"Red Gold" rocks

My column for Sunday's Away section is up on our web page. It talks about the documentary "Red Gold", which focuses on the threat proposed by the Pebble Mine near Bristol Bay, Alaska.

I was already a fan of the boys at Felt Soul Media, Travis Rummel and Ben Knight, for "Running Down the Man" and "The Hatch", but "Red Gold" took their work to the next level.

For a fun, but not a funny, read on their trip to Salt Lake City to film a segment of "Red Gold" check out their blog. The salmon picture is courtesy of Knight.

I look forward to their next effort.

I got permanently banned from Utah on the Fly for posting on this: maybe the trib is more open minded.

The Repub candidate for VP took quite an aggressive stance in blocking a bill that would have limited the scope of, or hopefully shut down this mine. There is not a real hunting or angling group that did not come out strongly against this mine, and for the clean water ballot initiative. Palin did two things that are unusual and potentially illegal. She not only stepped away from the usual stance of "no comment" on a ballot initiative but worked hard for its defeat. And she also, according to those in the know, shuttled state money into a campaign to insure its defeat. This is illegal.

To me this issue is a whole lot more important as to why Palin is a poor, poor choice for VP that the fact her daughter likes to have unprotected sex. Odd, though, that she would name her daughter after a bay (Bristol) that she is working hard to environmentally destroy.

Why not just require the mine to install a water purification plant?

Seems if LA can process raw sewage into purer drinking water than enter the system, this can be done for mine water as well.

Just a thought.
