HB 187 Fails
In a rare victory for environmental and recreation interests, the Utah House of Representatives voted against House Bill 187 41-34 in debate Tuesday afternoon, that would have limited recreational use of waters flowing over private land.
Even a substitute bill by sponsor Rep. Ben Ferry, R-Corinne, which would have added another 10 rivers to the list of open waters and would have done away with a 150-foot limitation of fishing near a home failed to sway enough legislators to pass the controversial bill.

This is a big win for Utah. We owe a lot of people our sincerest appreciation for their organizing efforts on this. Kudos.
The public did the unthinkable, sunk HB 187! A big thanks to everyone who wrote their Representatives, called, lobbied, informed, spoke out, went with out sleep, work, food and fishing to fight for something we believe in. Today the people spoke, and today the people were heard!
Everyone played a big roll in this victory. We all came together with a unified voice…. fantastic work everyone! Wow, unbelievable.
1. Please write your Representative(s) and let them know how they did. They worked hard for us; let them know you appreciate it.
2. Please use our precious resource with respect, humility and pride. Pick up that trash, repair that broken fence, mend the relationships with landowners and respect private property. We will be looked at very closely this year, let make sure we show them we are Guardians of the water and Stewards of the land.
The next steps are going to be about compromise and cooperation. It might not please everyone, but I feel we can please the masses. The bridge must be created and relationships repaired, or this issue will never go away.
Well played everyone!!
This is the best news I've heard in a long time! Now everyone should write their congressmen (who voted against the bill) and thank them!
