Jane Doe is now 20 and is expecting her second child on Dec. 15 -- a day after the preliminary hearing for FLDS leader Warren Jeffs is supposed to resume.
She spent more than four hours testifying during the Nov. 21 hearing, and while her voice quavered at times, Jane Doe handled herself very well. She had little trouble recalling details of her compelling, emotional story -- which caused the defense team to drill her later about how often she'd met with her attorneys to rehearse the testimony.
Anyway. On to her story.
Jane Doe said she attended Alta Academy from 1st grade through 6th grade, when she moved to Hildale. Jeffs was the principal at the school during those years.
"He's always been an authority figure in my life," Jane Doe said.
She described the man she was eventually married to as her "first cousin."
I might as well tackle this question here. Was John Doe Jane Doe's first cousin?
His father and her mother are siblings by different mothers. I think that makes Jane Doe and John Doe half first-cousins, if there is such a thing. It seems more accurate to just call them cousins.
