And the LDS Church says . . .
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a four-point statement today in response to Principle Voices:

1. This story once again illustrates the need for transparency and clarity on this issue.  The general public associates the word ''Mormon'' with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as in Mormon missionaries, Mormon Tabernacle Choir or Mormon temple.
They become confused, as our research clearly demonstrates, when they see media reports about so-called ''Mormon fundamentalists'' or ''Mormon polygamous groups.''

2. In particular, the FLDS group adopted the name Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints as recently as 1991, having been known by various other names after it originated in 1930, a full century after Joseph Smith established the first church to carry the name Latter-day Saint and the unofficial nickname, ''Mormon.''

3. We will continue to try to bring some clarity to this issue so people will understand that those practicing polygamy are in no way affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often referred to as the Mormon Church.

4. More information on this topic can be found at www.newsroom.lds.org.

A lot of people associate the word "freedom" with "America",but through compromising the principles of freedom over the years and wandering away from God, America isn't the same America that it used to be. The LDS Church isn't the same Church it used to be either.

It illustrates most of all that sadly you can't rely on the LDS Church to make a correct distinction.

When did they ever ask us what we believe? The LDS Church often complains people should go to them first to find out what its beliefs are. Why the double standard?

Did they realize that most Mormon Fundamentalists, even the polygamous ones, don't belong to the FLDS.

Perhaps Mormon Fundamentalists and LDS Church leaders could meet together to write a joint statement. Personally I think hell will freeze over first though.

The LDS is a faith and following that adopted 'Political Correctness' for a faith.

That is when it ended being a faith of credibility.

As messed up as the FLDS leadership is one has to respect that they are not waivering in their faith or principles.

Being an "outsider" to this disassociation turmoil and the Mormon faith, I am sometimes amazed at what is going on (though it is NOT a problem limited to ONLY this faith!).

To me, the basics of the disagreement seems to be what laws some decide they do not have to follow in their faith for some reason or another and what added rules they will approve or disapprove of.

Mix in politics, along with state and federal laws, and you get quite a mess to debate about.

I must admit that I have never understood how the LDS can say it is followers of Joseph Smith. It looks like a selective following of what an outsider would see was Smith's plan.

The members of the LDS church don't follow Joseph Smith's plan. They follow Jesus Christ's plan revealed to a living Prophet.

Modern revelation is the reason for the changes, not political correctness.

namaste, I would definately rethink your thinkings....the LDS Church has operated very politically since 1890...and thus has not yet given up the bad habit.

One has to also wonder why so many "Mormons" don't even know the difference between their own religion and the FLDS...there should be no confusion, if they really beleived in the LDS church.

There is a very informative blog that is doing an excellent job at addressing the LDS Church's recent anti-fundamentalist rant at:

He's really put together a great blog that is way overdue.

When I was on my mission a Nigerian man, who had been legally married to two wives in his own country, asked to be baptized.

The country I was teaching in accepted those marriages as valid. So he was breaking no laws.

Yet the LDS Church refused under any circumstances (and this came from Church headquarters) to allow him to baptized.

Another man on my mission had commit murder (killed his grandmother about 15 years earlier with a pair of scissors). He was allowed baptism.

So if you have more than one wife (even legally) you can't be baptized and go to the celestial kingdom, but if you kill your additional wives you have a chance! How does the LDS Church justify this?

So your saying that it's just been coincedental, right?

No. I'm saying that God knows all things, sees the big picture and directs His church

"I bought two horses but I couldn't tell them apart", said the old farmer.

"So what did you do?" asked his neighbor.

"Well, finally after all else failed I decided to measure the horses and see which one was taller."

"It was easy after I figured out the black horse is six inches taller than the white horse."

Did you know the Word of Wisdom does not have the word coffee in it? The Mormon church has spread the illusion that you're saved if you don't drink coffee or "mild barley drinks". One LDS girl even said she would rather commit adultery than drink these substances. Hmmmmmm. How interesting.......
